#35754, "Once upon a time, on 2gnt.com..."

...there would have been people asking if our members in Texas were okay from the storm. It's been a long, long time since those days, I suppose.

We're fine so far, just for the record.

To be fair I asked in chat, you just havent responded yet

I was also looking at transtar and the Weather Channel.

Seriously though, hope your ok. I dont have internet at the new house yet, but I was watching CNN, they were too busy with the Obama-McCain grieving fest.

EDIT: judging by what im seeing for Freeport, Galveston, and some town with an M, it hasnt hit yet.

I was watching the Cubs/Cardinals game last night, and heard them say something about having the next 2 days off with games postponed against the Astros in Houston. That's when I thought oh shit, hope they are prepared!

Once upon a time I would have played your WarBand account while you sat out a hurricane...

Oh, and I figured you were pretty ok based on your current status: "Dino Yancey is on his porch, drunk as fuck, watching the world blow away. A storm's a-brewin'."

I don't worry about Dino. Ike can bitch slap Texas all the way to the panhandle. Texas will not be moved. And assuming all hell breaks loose, Dino will crawl out of bed the next morning, step out into the sun, throw his shades on, light a smoke, look around, and say, "Fuuuuck. I got so drunk Houston has a hangover this morning."

Baton Rouge got hit hard for Gustav.

Dino, I hope everything works out ok for you. I'm sure all the linemen here will be heading your way as soon as they finish getting most of the large subdivisions in town back up with power.

Are you staying in town for the storm Dino? I have a few friends who are treking back to Austin to get out of dodge.

I myself am still in PA but have a flight heading to Austin tomorrow at 8am. I highly doubt that is going to happen. Looks like I'm heading to Charlotte for the weekend.

Hell, I'd rather be in Texas during a Cat. 3 storm than spend another day in PA.

There was a hurricane hitting Houston???

Who knew...guess I've been working too many hours to watch the news.

Seriously though, I hope you guys down there are alright, it sounds like it's been ugly down there.

I live in a very small country wooden house...in the woods....35 miles from the coast of Galveston. I didn't know my house was only 35 miles from the coast, until I used the ruler tool in Google Earth.

Then I saw a 750 mile diameter storm coming thursday night. Yeah, we left...

So, I took savings, grabbed my external HDDs, my laptop, the baby, the wife, some clothes, and we left. I drove the obscure way to Austin, TX by going hwy 90 west all the way and went up 183 to Austin. EVERYBODY else was stuck off I-10 and 290 for at least 3 hours from what I heard on our way. We left friday at noon, the trees were already swinging. We got to Austin friday afternoon at 4pm.

I had neighbors that stayed and kept us up to date. Apparently, making a long story short... 3 houses in our subdivision got hit by trees, and my wife's car.

Luckily, our home was safe and secure, but my wife's car died. We were almost paid off with it, too. BUT, she has amazing equity invested due to it's year, extreme low miles and being AWD. So, I already called Progressive and they'd "look into it when they can".

We're still going to stay since our subdivision still has no power. According to other friends and family (who are fine, btw) they all have no power.

Another friend was getting groceries in HEB off Chimney Rock in the dark, with the power off. People were getting groceries with cash and good old fashioned paper trails, like the old days.

The Reliant Stadium, Transco Tower, major Downtown area, and the north easter side got severe damage. Skyscrapers with 60% of their glass windows blown out, streets littered downtown with glass, debris, etc.

There is a boiling water alert in Houston, since the water is dirty and contaminated with oil, chemicals and bacteria. The streets smell of sewer...it's bad.

This is probably the most damage Houston has seen since Alicia, and the 1900 storm of Galveston.

Yeah, the Capital is boring, everything's overpriced in Austin, but we're okay and trying to keep our baby entertained.

Heer's one pic my neighbor sent of my wife's car...

Had to crack three WEP keys, but I finally found one that still has internet (it's a DSL, not cable!)

We kept power the entire storm. Everything out here is fucked up, trees down everywhere. I hear downtown is smashed. I lost cable. I lost water for about 24 hours. It's working again, but the hot water is still out. We fared pretty well, all thing considered.

APparently, I am stranded. I got one more day to check out of this hotel and I'm out of money.

I sent this email to an undisclosed interested party that helps my family and business out when we are in need....

How are you and your family dealing with all this? Do you have food and gas? Are you prepared for 2-3 weeks?

Everyone's telling us to stay where we are. Jennifer's friend in Sugarland texted they have no gas, 8 hrs wait for gas lines, generator is out of gas, can only run at night...cell phone is about to die, etc... it's like the entire city has shut down completely.

Other friends report outages of meat in restaurants, HEB grocery shopping in the dark no electricity, with cash and paper receipts...gas pumps not working with no electricity...etc.

Tomorow morning is our check out date. I only have $300 to get us wherever we go, and I'm out. I have 2 options I guess....go to Arizona and stay with my parents or go to Arkansas and stay with her aunt or grandma. Either way, once we get there, we have run out of resources and I don't think either parents are in a position to really help out.

I'm soooo sorry about all of this. We are worried about you and everyone else there. This is truly amazing and unexpected. Everyone thought Houston was bulletproof because we don't have a weak levys, because we got 30 ft seawalls....etc.

This beats out Alicia and the great storm of 1900.

What do you think we should do? Keep staying here for $150 a night plus eating and gas? Or go elsewhere and stay with family? It might be a 2-3 week dilemna from what I'm expecting and hearing about.

I will do whichever action you think I should take for us.

Thanks,

-Mike

Krikey. Sounds like south central Texas took a beating this weekend. Ouch.

Hope everything works out soon for all of you down there.

(And funny to think that Dino was hacking routers during the storm so he could keep updating Twitter. That's some dedication!)

With a truck as big as that, Myke, why don't you guys just go home? If the neighbors stayed and there's no flooding, you'd at least have shelter for free. Snag some groceries before you head back down and stock up with the remaining cash. Get home, straighten things out, and hope for the power to come on soon. I don't imagine it's too cold at night right now, is it?

Just a thought. Hate to see you guys rolled by mother nature.

my condolences to everyone out in houston and surrounding areas. this storm was originally forcasted to hit my area (just south of corpus). if it were to hit us we probably would had been wiped out for good. we had dolly about a month ago and that was just a CAT 1. i cant imagine what a 3 or greater would had done.

There's a way bigger picture here, though....and too much to type as to why. But I cannot take the heat, and my 1 year old needs electricity for proper care making sure he's comfortable, and groceries/supplies would be limited as everyone else in the area. I'd rather just wait until things are normal again, or near normal.

Right now people are coming from houston and going west to share all of Katy's resources, so Katy is slowly coming back up...but food and gas are slow and long lines still.

Fuck it, we're going to see the Alamo now. I better see a basement there too when I show up.

Well, I've never been through some serious shit like a hurricane, so you would know better than I, sir. Tornados back in Kansas were some shit, but not even remotely on this level.

I wish you the best. Skip the Alamo. The bike's in Hollywood. You could start a paper route to raise money for the cause.

Dino and Myke, I haven't been on this board in awhile but if you guys need a place to stay in DFW hit me up. Sorry it's a little late but we just buried my mother a week ago. My heart goes out to you guys down there on the coast. I used to fish Galveston about every two months. Kinda like a second home to me.

We went and saw the Alamo, The Wax Museumn, The Ripley's Believe it or Not Museumn, and ate at Pat O'Brians for lunch so far today.... You have to take your hat off in the Alamo and be quiet.

We're going to the Riverwalk thang tonight.

If you yell out "The stars at night are big and bright" anywhere near the Alamo, it's true; people really DO yell out "DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS!"

San Antonio is neat.

I thoroughly enjoyed San Antonio when I was there a few years ago, and wouldn't mind going back. We checked out the Alamo at about 2am - it was surrounded by more cockroaches than I've ever seen in my life!
