#3510, "sooo...WHY did you all buy a NT?"

I was just checking out the surveys section, and noticed that a whopping 600+ of us plan to add a turbo at some point. I was just curious why you decided to go NT in the first place?

for me it was just ignorance, really. I bought this car before I knew how to drive it (manual)..and for WHATEVER reason thought it'd be easier to learn on a NT. I realize now that was pretty stupid on my part. emoji

I wouldn't say it was stupid at all chica. I think most of us bought these cars for money reasons. Either not being able to afford/find a good turbo car and also insurance costs. Some may have been parental factors. I know when I bought my car I just fell in love with the looks of the car and found out I could afford it so I bought it. I was upgrading from a 1984 delta 88 though, so it felt fast to me...lol

At the time, there were no 2G Eclipses in my area.

Some girl I liked said it was her favorite car, but she'd never get it.

I bought it not knowing anything about it. I was a day late on a GS-T. This one had power options so, meh.

So to sum up, I just got it to make her mad.

About 4 years ago, I was driving an 89 Honda Civic 4 door. Ever see one of these? They're uglier than sin. I was wanting a 2g gsx and looked everywhere for one. I finally found one at Carmax of all places. It was all stock, black with black interior, 5 speed, and very low miles (~30k). They wanted 12.5k for it. I couldn't get financed for it nor could I find a co-signer because I didn't have any credit at the time being 18 years old. I had to have a new car because walking down to that Honda everyday was depressing. I found a 1998 gs for 7k with 85k miles, black and grey interior, 5 speed. It had it's little nicks and things that needed to be fixed, but I didn't care. Now it's my baby. I love my car.

i have always loved the styling of the 2g eclipse back in 97-98. I did not know the differences then about an RS, GS, and turbo models.

A salesguy at AutoNation USA in houston talked me into it, and I didn't even know how to drive a standard yet. I learned driving it home the hard way back in May 1999... Months later I discovered 2gnt.com on google search. This was back in 2000. It's been fun ever since!

i had a 95 talon esi...i fell in love with the 2g from the very first time i saw one on the road. I was borderline obcessed. I turned 18 and was on my own...my friend co-signed for me, and then BuckNutty came out to play :-p I have an 01 Maxima Anniversary edition now though. To me, it doesn't really matter about the power plant, the 2g is one of the most beautiful cars on the road.

However, do not down the 420a. I feel it can be a beast, and have had my hands in on a few projects that prove that. I would rather spend the extra money on the power and save on the monthly insurance paymens...you can get nicer stuff that way emoji

I bought my car in 2000, when I was finishing HS and I was almost 18. Insurance was still pretty high. Plus I paid $3500 under blue book value and I only worked part time so I didn't have a lot of $. I also didn't know anything about cars and just thought the 2G eclipse looked good. Didn't care about speed. I bought a sound system for it that same month and went to the beach a bunch of times. Thought I was so cool until that fall/winter when I decided to turbo it, when not that many people had done it and I wanted to try it out. If I had to do it over again I wouldn't of done it and I would of sold the car and bought a GST/GSX. I can't complain now though. Still miss the 2gnt cause it's a great car but if I ever bought another one, I would keep in stock.

I bought mine back in '99 when I was still in highschool. At that time, I could't afford the price for the gs-t or gsx let alone the insurance on it. Enjoyed that car for 6 years. Now I'm in a BMW. emoji

I actually had my eye on a 99 GSX, but it was auto. So I kept looking for a 2g, and found 2. One was a silver 96 RS 5spd, and the other was a red 97 RS auto. I asked about the 5spd, and said I would be back, but when I got back, the 5spd was gone, and all that was left was the auto. emoji So I got an auto anyway, and it was NT. I like my car, but I hate auto's.

I've always been in love with DSMs after owning a 1G Talon. I was well aware of turbo models but just couldn't afford the insurance... hell, they all look the same; sexy as hell. After trashing the transmission on the 1G, I went out looking for a 2G and wham... someone at my work was selling their completely stock 1995 Eclipse GS with power everything for $2,000.

I loved the way they looked, didn't know much about these cars and performance, the only reason I was looking for a turbo model was so I could say it was a turbo at the time I didn't care about it going fast or not, but I couldn't find one in my price range. I was getting my license soon and settled for the nt. Wish I would have gotten a gst/x now, but I love the looks of the 2g, so the only way I will ever get rid of it is if I happen to come across a great deal on a 2g gsx/gst

When I was 12 years old I always use to look at the circulars like yea, I want an Eclipse when I get my license. Well 5 Years later I still wanted the car and I bought it. I really wanted a turbo but couldnt afford insurance, also wanted a 5 speed but my parents told me I wasn't allowed because since I was a new driver I would have other things to worry about while driving other than learning how to shift the car, so they didnt want me to get into an accident as a new driver on their insurance. There were many times I wanted to sell the car.. and I mean many just because of pure hatred of the amount of money I spent on it, and things not working rite and the fact that I could now get a 5-speed and afford the gst or gsx. Well today I still own in and I still love it, I don't plan to sell it because I have dumped more money into it than I care to think about it. It has come along way since the stock gs I originally bought from the small dealership back home, and its a great looking car with power to boot and I love turning heads with it.

98' Eclipse GS- Hahn Stage 2- SOLD
02' Honda S2000- SOLD

I didn't buy it. This black hole of money was given to me my senior year of high school with 134k on it. I wanted the TSi AWD or a TSi for that matter, but hey... Free car. I'm glad I got this though, cheaper insurance.

This car used to be my father's. He was going to get rid of it and buy a new car, but held on to this car for another 2-3 years because he knew how much I wanted it! I even told him "I'll pay the rest of the payments on it just to have it". He paid it off while I drove a crap Skylark and my collar bone healed enough for me to learn stick.

This thing spent 2 weeks in the shop with the mechanics dumbfounded as to what the hell this sound was. The sound was everything on the timing side about to fall off. Yeah, maintenance was never done on it... oil changes occurred somewhere in the 6000-9000mile interval.

Around 6 years later I still have the car. I still love the car, I've loved it since my father brought it home from the dealer. I've loved the feel of it, the sound of it, and obviously the looks of it.

I'm hooked, The only way this car leaves is if it is damaged beyond repair, or somebody prys it and the keys away from my cold dead hands.

I knew there were turbo models, but I had no idea how to differentiate the two. I had no idea one was the 420a and the other was 4g63. I thought both were 100% grade A misubishi motors. Anywho, this is how ignorant I was. When I bought it, for a day or two, I was convinced my car was the turbo model (talk about being automotive-ly challenged) because it had a 9k rpm...LOL. Took me a few days to figure out I had no turbo since I never found it under my hood. Then I finally begin learning about the car thru machV asking them questions about turbos. They finally lead me to hahn racecraft. I bought the turbo, had it installed, and then finally at work, a friend that I had met, also had a 2g. I was looking for a turbo spoiler and he told me to search 2gnt (his name here was "natebomb") where I looked around for months before joining and then finally learned about the damn 420a. HA.

edit: oh, and just to show what 2gnt can do to a person. I'll be starting a engine tear down this weekend to install a built motor. Back then I would have considered this suicide.

It was a car I always found myself staring at when I drove past it. I loved the style and how I couldn't take my eyes off of it. So my VW started to faulter so I was looking for a good nice fun car. I was originally looking for a nice GSX but found that I couldn't swing $475 a month for insurance. So I looked for a GS-T but found that my insuance would be nearly the same. Well left me looking for a GS. I knew I wanted a white one because well.. it's just the best damn color. Never bought it with the intentions of modyfing it like I have. Given the chance again.. I would have bought something else.

My father bought my older sister a 2G Talon and I feel in love with them at that moment. I knew all about the turbo model but I heard to many stories at the moment of how they break all the time. I got my sister 2G then she broke that. I decided to get a NT again because a few reasons. One was hearing of how turbos break all the time. Two, which is kind of sad, is I love Chrysler and mopar so I decided to get it for the engine. Now that I know more I really wish I would have gotten a Tsi. I love my car but college just cant pay for even a stage one turbo. I'll keep it though and turbo it later when I get more money emoji

Factory turbo eclipses (GS-T are just not made the way a real turbo car should be in my opinion, i was like everyone else and wanted a gs-t but could nt afford it so i got the rs model and modded since. i know im left with a far better car than anyone who purchases a stock gs-t. you know before i went turbo i was reall iffy about it and i had the money to sell my rs that was fully modded n/a and buy a nice gs-t or keep my car and get the turbo kit, in the end i decide to go with the 2nd option. im very happy with the eng result, its fun to mess with people because they think im n/a with my drum brakes in the rear and black mirrors, on the same note insurance is dirt cheap compared to the gs-t and why buy a gs-t and trade out all your turbo parts to better ones and up grade internals and all that cause thats the only way to make serious power. also it did help that i have become well accustomed to the 420a motor and felt compfortable working on it.

Well they were pretty rare in Asia, so everytime I saw one, I was like, wow! And then when I moved here, at first we were looking at just cheap econo sedans and coupes. But fuck, Civics were more expensive than the NT Eclipse! Then I found one at a dealer, and since it was pretty cheap compared to others that looked like crap, I got this car instead. I didn't even know that these cars came in different trims. I saw the rims, the spoiler, and the 10 CD changer, and I was sold. I was such a dumbfuck... O wait, I still am... emoji

MY mom and dad gave me a 95 auto civic to roll around in, I was looking for an eclipse since day one but never found one at a good price. Eventually I found a 97 gst, white, 40k going for 7g. I got all excited me and my dad took it for a test drive and the ac didnt work, the tranny grinded, the car vibrated while it drove down the road. Turned out it had 30k in cali 4 years before so someone winded it back a couple thousand miles. A week later i came across the 420a and fuigered WTF, ill put a turbo on that it wont be too hard...

If I could do it again, I would have kept the civic for a beater and gotten a 91 gsx/tsi awd... which is what I am doing now.

Since they are very rare here in my country, the gst/x was not an option. I don't think I ever seen one. I looked around and found a silver 99 rs, there was no choice but to buy it.

back when i had my nt, although ive only been without it for two weeks, i got it because i had loved eclipse's as a kid and my dad got a good deal on it. we picked it up years ago when it was worth 7 or 8k, drove out of a ford dealership with it for just under 5k. the geniuses who worked there couldnt figure out a small "breathing" problem that it had and let it go for less than they wanted to. took it to a mechanic friend of my dad's and it ended up being a loose vacuum hose, lol. looking back, as much as i wished that i had gotten a gsx at times, i loved my nt and i will be back in one as soon as i find one for my girlfriend.

I bought my car back in March '01 on my 16th birthday, well I take that back, my parents paid a downpayment on it and I paid payments on it until it was paid off.

I bought it from Carmax here in Charlotte and I saw it a month before I acutally bought it because my parents took me look at cars. I liked it because it was clean and only had 40k miles on it. But I honestly thought the front bumper (97 talon) was a body kit so it made me want it bad. My parents told me they could afford to help me buy it so I forgot about it.

A month later my Mom picked me up from school to go take my drivers test on my birthday and they told me they paid the downpayment on it. Looking back it was the happiest day of my life to date. I drove it home and thought it was so smooth and powerful, I was in love from day one.

About 6 months later I got into wanting to upgrade and a friend of mine had a 97 tsi awd and we popped hoods to compare and I was wondering why our motors was so different. Damn

i got a RS only because i wasnt in the whole "racing and fast" scene. Pluse I got a brand new 98 for 13000 out the door. The sticker on it was about 19k before the usual tax, tag, and title. I tried to trade it in on a GSX, but the finance fell though, and the next guy that bought it, the brakes went completely out. It was then in Sport Compact Car mag. When I picked up the issue, a guy that runs a huge shop in my old hometown, his car (supra) was on the cover and the GSX that i was gonna buy was in there because it was his brother. I wish now that the financing would have went though, I really loved having the all wheel drive. I still have the RS, but it is back home with my sister.
