#34552, "The incorrect way to become a movie theater projectionist. (LONG)"

Hey guys! It's been a long time, no? Anybody miss me?

The family is going great, my son is now 14 months old and getting into everything. My business is going good and whatnots. I haven't heard anything about Lois since I sold it unfortunately...

In the midst of me trying other things, I wanted to be a movie projectionist. How cool, huh?

Not really... if you want to read my entire account and experience of working at a Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, look no further: http://kaptainmyke.blogspot.com/2008/07/incorrect-way-to-become-movie.html .

Worst experience of my life. And now, my wife and I will probably never step foot in an Alamo Drafthouse ever again.

Theaters still use film? Ha! I thought they were all digital now.

Tough luck Mike...better luck next time.

Mike, the situation sucks but you have to start at the bottom and work hard like everyone else. You dont just walk into a company and do what you want exactly how you want.

In my opinion you assumed you were going to just be a projectionist and not have to do anyhting else. Theaters are not that simple.

Sorry

On the same hand...Mike made it seem like they had no intention of moving him up. What I got out the story is he felt like they were taking advantage of him by filling his head with promises that may never be fulfilled.. Idunno...

But unless they directly stated you will begin training as a projectionist, all promises were assumed. From what I read thye asked him if he could act as a food runner for 2 weeks, he quit after 3 days. Not the way it works, you cant tell them what your willing to do. Work is work, if they are paying you then you do what your told. You dont get paid to pick and choose what you want to do.

I see both sides of the argument. No doubt, you have to work your way up to the top. But, I did tell her I'd rather be in the ticket booth or projectionist room upstairs. I "tried" the food running thing to learn the store and whatnot. I decided that part is/was not for me.

If that's the way it is, then it is what it is. I do think, that I should have been paid more for my time, my effort, and they could have been upfront with me from the getgo. They need food runners like collection agencies need collectors. It's a high-turn-around in this service industry.

Bottom line, I should go to a movie theater and not a drafthouse/restaurant/movie theater.

It also should not have taken me 2 months to get a $40 check.

I have a family that depends on me now. I don't want to be driving home on the same roads as some of these drunks are when they get off work.

Also the amount of on the job drinking, the carelessness, the overordered food, the nasty sanitation methods of the kitchen and store.... my wife and I will most likely not return to an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema ever again. We used to pay them a lot of money over the years....oh well.

I'm sure if my article was sent to corporate, those managers probably aren't even working there anymore. I know that one store manager had only been there less than 90 days, because she told me she just got her insurance benefits.

Your absolutely correct about your paycheck, thats terrible management.

The issues with drinking and sanitation.....guess what, thats most restruants. beleive it or not, if you knew what it was like behind the scene, you would never eat out.

Watch the movie "waiting" all the antics in that movie really do happen.

You can be hit by a drunk anywhere, anytime.

Well, okay I agree with your points...it was nothing new I already said or figured as much anyway. I wrote my personal account and experience, and there you have it.

I'm appalled that our society has evolved in a way that people just say "well, that's the way it is in the restaurant business". Fuck that! That's not the way it should be! I'm disappointed in society if that's what it's come down to now.
