Obviously you've never used a Macbook.
I have one and support several, I like them.

Agreed. I work in production and we use both on a consistent basis. Most of my daily work nowadays has shifted to about 90% on a mac and only the other 10% on a pc when i have to use something propriatary, old, or just want to play a game for a while. With VMware fusion these days you can, for the most part, run every pc software normally on the mac. Win/win situation.

have you tried asking the school what they recomend? most engineering schools will spec a system thats recomended to make sure that its compatible with there systems/software/network.
we ended up buying my brother a Silicon Graphics machine for when he went to Savanna College of Art and Design because thats pretty much all we saw on the tours, turns out he didnt meed that high-end of a machine but we never asked anybody

Office 2008 is fully supported on OS X, with Exchange support and LDAP authentication with Active Directory. As well, if you absolutely must run Windows applications, buy Parallels. There's nothing a Windows laptop can do better than a Mac. You don't game on laptops anyway.
Religious flamewars aside, what it really comes down to is how much you want to pay. You can buy some cheapass Dell notebook for $450. If you want a MacBook, they start at nearly $1000.
