I happened to read thru that this morning. I thought it was actually quite interesting the discussion they had about how we misinterpret MPG as fuel consumption. Many people are very unaware about how inaccurate their MPG rating is. Mainly because of their own personal driving habits. I also found it interesting to say that you find a bigger amount of savings from say 16mpg to 26mpg as you would 20mpg to 30mpg even though you are increasing the mpg by 10, your fuel comsumption rate is very different. Please discuss.. I would like to see more opinions on this subject.

I didn't read the 3 pages because I'm lazy. I just compare my averages ever time I fill up to see how my different driving styles affect my mileage/fuel consumption.
On average, I get about 19-21 mpg. Typically anywhere from 250 miles to 280, and as much as 300-310 on freeway only trips, on a tank of gas. My tank's 15 gallons, but I typically add about 13 gallons each time I get gas. It's worth it to me to drive this vehicle, vs my 2gnt that got about 25 daily, and as much as 32 on the freeway. I only average about 10k-12k miles a year, though.
That's an average of 600 gallons in the mustang a year, vs 480 in the eclipse. That works out to something like $23 a month difference if gas was $2.30/gal.
What I don't understand is why is the cost of fuel so much more expensive if the price per barrel of oil hasn't increased that drastically.
Exxon (or one of the heavy hitters) reported the highest net income of all time several months ago when gas shot up. That's what pisses me off. They say they have to raise gas prices because vehicles are more economical than they used to be. Bullshit, there are more cars on the road now, too, that should help fill the gap.

This is funny because on my daily driver makes all the calculations for me...such as instant and average MPG, among a slew of other things. And for a couple of months or so I didn't reset the average and my exhaust needed repairing. With the exhaust being so loud I didn't drive as aggressively as I usually do, because it was so crazy loud. So my average MPG went up to 22.6 MPH. But now that I have the exhaust fix I have my foot to the floor more, with in a couple of days my average went down to 22.1. I've been able to nurse it back up to 22.3 but that was with a couple of decent highway trips. Having that data at my finger tips has turn MPG into a bit of an obsession for me...even though 1/2 gallon Per mile isn't going to amount to much...but i do drive quite a bit.

I'd rather not calculate my mpg. I'm sure it sucks. Can't imagine what it would be if I modded the car more.

It can't be that bad. I used to drive my cougar daily, which got 10-12 on the freeway. Now it uses about 1/2 gallon per 1/4 mile, but that includes my burnout and return. 5 gallons at $5.75/gal is about 10 passes. Luckily I tinker with the car in between, or I'd be adding fuel ever few hours.

ever since gas prices have been jumping, i have realy been watching my driving habbits. i accelerate at a slower speed..and i set my speed at about 65 on the highways. combine that with a new o2 sensor and iv been getting 500+ miles to a tank. iv actually hit 520 and i still didnt have the fuel light on. of course, mine is overland driving..not stop and go like traffic. but i can get all that on anywhere from 12-14 gallons. netting anywhere from 35-38 mpg. even when i get on it halfway and drive 70-75 i still net in the 30's.

I've been recording my every single fuel up and miles traveled for 5 1/2 years on the 2gnt now, along with the mods. When I hit 100,000 (I'm at 92,000 now), I'm going to analyze it statistically and put it on 2gnt. Just by eyeing the numbers the car has averaged 32-33, and peaks around 36-37 mpg on long distance trips if I obey the speed limits. If I do 80-90 MPH I'm back to 32-33 on the freeway.
I don't have OCD, I'm just a nerd and got into the habit of recording my MPGs.

1st full tank on the Evo (14 gal) lasted me almost 235 mi. Thats about 16.5 mi/gal. And I'm still breaking it in. I don't want to know what it's going to be when I start really beating on it. Oh and my insurance went from $1100/yr to $2300. Assholes better stop crashing them... Oh yeah, I edited to title. When I first saw the link, I thought you were talking about video.

I get around 20 mpg just driving around normally (rev limiter at least once a day). I've gotten as high as 23.x though. Remember they run really rich stock (9:1) so even light tuning with a SAFC will do wonders once you start exercising the throttle. Insurance sucks too, I'm almost 40, no points, married, house, etc, and I pay over $1200/yr.

It's ok. I'm a nerd to. I started recording the miles per tank and the $ I spent ever since I bought the 2gnt in early 2000. Don't really pay to much attention to it anymore but it's a habit.

Dag yo, I think I've only gotten like 26 or so.
I don't know though, it's been almost half a year since I drove it.

If I really get on Daisy, I'll pull down 400 miles on a tank, mixed city/highway. Coming back from LA after MOD last April, I was doing about 90-100 once I left Palm Springs and saw 200 miles on the first quarter, 350 at the half, and 400 at the last quarter mark. I think that, once I get above 3krpm, the port work is flowing good enough to allow the ECU to lean things out a bit and add a couple MPGs to the trip. I'll usually get around 30mpg everywhere I go, but I'll be curious how she does this summer once she's actually tuned.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, last tank I only got about 330 miles and that was shifting to the highest gear which would maintain speed. This tank, I have been intentionally holding lower gears to keep the RPMs around 2500-3000rpm (for more aggressive rush hour driving) and I'm over 160 miles on the first quarter. Air velocity is a good thing.

With all this said and people to scared calculating their mileage and what not. Let me put this out there. Try being without a vehicle and not being able to anywhere. And if you wanted to go somewhere you had to take a cab. I sometimes spend $120 over the weekend just to go out in town. I will never bitch about gas prices again, because its really not much money at all when you look at the convience you have to go where you want when you want.
Interesting discussion I had today in class. This war we are fighting, once we get iraq on their feet, dont think we are walking out empty handed like yea thanks for helping us out now go take it in the ass. We are writing every little thing down and we are taking tabs, so soon enough when it comes to pay up we will get oil from them very cheaply because I really don't think they have much of anything else to give us to equate to the amount of debt they are ringing up.. Just food for though so dont worry about your shitty gas mileage in the good ol' 2g.

Yes exxon and other oil companys reported record profits over the last few monthes, but you have to look at the profit margins. Now say a gas station just filled its tanks at 2$ a gallon and the next day the prices went up to 2.30$ a gallon, their not gonna keep selling the gas they bought for 2$ for 2$ a gallon, their gonna sell it for 2.30$ a gallon because they may have to replace it at that price or higher, so in essence just because they bought it for 2$ a gallon, that gas is now worth 2.30$ a gallon regardless of what they payed for it. In turn their profits on paper go up significantly. The same thing applies with oil companys but on a much much larger scale. And yes the oil companys are making more money than in years past, but its not like their raping the american public. It may seem that way but exxon does'nt control the price of barrels of oil.

sheesh. makes me sad...i remember the days of getting 25mpg city with my eclipse when gas was $1.5x a gallon for premium and i though that was expensive...i'm LUCKY if i see 15mpg now and i am feeding it premium at $2.39/gallon
