#33297, "Need help with new Laptop/Router!!!"

Yesterday was my wife's brithday and I bought her a Laptop for her work and what not. Anyway, cut to the chase, I know nothing about computers. Guy told me that I had to buy a router. I bought one, it was $58, it is a Linksys brand. He said it was a great router or whatever. Trying to install it, I unhooked up the line from the back of my PC Modem to the back of the router and then a new line from the router to the back of the Modem. I installed the router cd software onto my PC and it worked okay and I can get onto the internet on my PC. Now I tried installing the software onto the new laptop and it wont recognize the router and i CANNOT get onto the internet on the laptop, but i can on my PC downstairs right now.

So anyone know what I am doing wrong here? I am starting to get frustrated emoji

no icons.

it should be wireless i guess.

the guy told me the only thing that i needed to make this work, with wireless, was the router. he said the laptop would already be set up for everything else...?

Does it have a button on the front or side to turn the built-in wireless feature on/off? What model is it?

Go into the router settings, and make sure you are actually broadcasting an SSID. (Linksys generally defaults to 192.168.1.1) Also note the encryption key. (You'll need to enter this on your wife's lappy.) Make sure that the wireless functionality of the lapy is turned on. Locate the SSID from your router and enter the key.

Yes the SSID is enabled. I dont know how to enter the encryption key. That seems to be the default too. The wireless is turned on the lappy. And how do I enter the router # or whatever into the laptop?

cool, are you using a wireless G or wireless N.
Both are decent but the wireless N has a better connection speed, if you use the same brand for the adapter and router you don't have the fuse about freezing up or reconnecting when its off.

Hows your car running with squirt daily driving and would it pass ohio e-check

Personally, I would stay away from N until they finalize the spec. You may wind up with a piece of hardware that doesn't work too well later on if the spec changes much.
