I had my gsxr1000 dyno tuned yesterday and gained about 6 hp, peak to peak. Above 10k RPM, I gained more, and gained around 10 HP near 12.5k RPM.
It put down 153 HP and 76-ish ft-lbs of torque. It's mostly stock. The only mods are a K&N air filter (as if that's a mod), and custom slip-on exhaust (slip-on is only the last half, still uses stock header).
AFR was pretty close to begin with, but fattened up above 8-9k RPM. It gained a good amount of torque around 2k RPM, but that really doesn't help much on a bike that spins 13.5k RPM.

Because peaky engines with extremely narrow power bands would be a chore to drive everyday. So, no, I don't really wonder about it.

it could be done on a 2gnt but you'd have to spend a lot of time R&Ding a setup that would net you a 12,000 rpm capable engine that would still idle worth anything and not blow up after being looked at funny
