I got laid off my job a week before thanksgiving and it fucking sucked. I needed some cash and so I found a bed frame in the garage and made a few garden trellis' and sold them on craigslist. So far its been paying for some things but hopefully it kind of takes off and I can go on a large run for a winery or something. Ive even made some copper trellis' and have been TIG welding those as well, not something most people can do!
heres a picture of one of my latest, if anything I enjoy welding tube more than anything lol

If it wasn't for the fact you had to weld them, I would have to say that borders on the girly side. Sometimes I guess you have to do whatever you can to pay the bills, way to be innovative.

it takes quite a bit of time to tig weld the whole thing. Ive been getting 100-130$ for them and material so far hasn't costed me more than a tank of argon yet so thats cool. Im running the HTP gas lens and pyrex cup and flow 5-7cfm of argon (normal cups im up near 15cfm) and its super clean and I save gas. Ive even welded in the wind with this thing with the tungsten way the fuck out and its still shielding, im impressed...its cool because you can run around tube and weld through the back and still see the arc

They look good, and the fact that you tig'd them makes it even cooler. Are you using any filler at all? I do a bit of tig welding every so often at my highschool (best one in the class, but only about 4-5 peeple can tig at all)

yea I use 70s-2 for filler on the steel ones I make and a copper alloy filler for the copper projects. If you get a chance, try tig welding some copper, it's fluid like aluminum but if your tungsten is sharp and small enough it is very controllable and turns out sexy looking. I like welding it a lot actually, but not more than aluminum.
Did you know that you can weld aluminum to steel?

I see the possibilities of running a small business. Become proficient enough with CAD and come up with different designs to market/advertise and next thing you know boom it takes off and you get a nice project for a winery or something of that nature like you stated.
Even if it is "girly" garden stuff or whatever you're still making money to get by making something out of nothing. Nice work man.

I can read blueprints. where do you live? Colorado by chance?
I use the program bend-tech pro for chassis work and an ornamental design program to get ideas and weights and cost of materials per trellis, etc. I'm faster if I design and build at the same time though.

Wow nice work Josh. There are lots of things you can do for homes - spiral staircases, window treatments, elaborate gates. If you can find an area where the market for home improvements is still good, you could start your own business with that talent. Custom make things for rich clients, and you are set.
I'm impressed with a lot of the welding I've seen on 2gnt in the past year. I wanted to play around with this myself, but classes usually overlap with my work schedule.

Im putting in a 1g 5 speed w/LSD in my 2g GST and I need 2 mounts moved over 6-7 inches for this to work. I have no problem supporting a fellow 2gnter over getting it done by a local.

Awesome work. Fuck "girly", they pay more for metalwork than guys do. You should see my gf drool over the steampunk shit in the architecture magazines.

edit: as far as certification...there are a million and a half AWS (american welding society) individual weld tests you can be certified in. Position, metal type and thickness, type of welding, etc.
I've been welding professionally for awhile now, experience has a lot to do with your welding skills. Just because someone might get lucky and get a good looking face weld, doesnt mean they can do it over...and over, and over again or that it even has any structural integrity. Some AWS certs are easy tests, theyre easy to pass and they give you a good amount of headroom depending on what program you go through. Some jobs ive had they test you in one or two positions (mostly vertical and flat) and they send them off to xray. That way, they own the cert and you just have your name on it. Whatever. Biggest point is a "qualified welder" is not a "certified" welder. A certified welder doesnt mean that person can weld anything anytime, its way specific.
If you want to get certified, look into exactly what test you need to take. Get a welding book. Practice. Practice. Practice. Ive spent a million and a fucking half hours behind my hoodbeing consistent in ALL POSITIONS all the time, is the key.
TIG welding really isnt that hard, ive taught people the basics one on one and they were laying nice beads on stainless in 5 minutes. The hard part is consistent xray quality welds, which takes time and skill. A cold weld will look nice, and fail.
There are a lot of parameters to know and that only comes with experience. MIG in this aspect is harder, much harder when you get into spray arc transfer, etc...the motion is a cakewalk, the setup can be challenging.
Once you weld something, it's yours forever. It's your signature and its unique.

Outstanding, you should totally do it! And I'm in Clackamas, so SE I guess (at least, that's what they tell me).
We should get together some time. I've been in PDX for about a year now and don't have a whole lot of friends outside of my gf's small family, so I need to start adding people.
