#29705, "Ahh I'm Finally ASE Certified..."
Dec-08-07 04:52 PM by WickedESi

I finally have 2 years shop experience under my belt, so I took the 6 of the ASE tests a month ago, got the results back, and are now certified in:

A1 Engine Repair
A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles
A4 Suspension and Steering
A5 Brakes
A7 Heating and Air Conditioning (Also have my 609 EPA Certification)

In February I'm registered to take:

A6: Electrical/Electronic Systems
A8: Engine Performance

...my strongest areas emoji then I'll be a Master Technician before I graduate from UTI, woo hoo!

I owe it to 2GNT, which was my training wheels into the field when I was just a nub. emoji

Congrats on the ASE. That's tits. Now you know who all the local DSMers will call when they have a question on theory. Haha.

rock on emoji

It took me awhile to realize most employers don't care if you just say you know what you're doing, they like the papers and experience + ASE's if you really have a shot getting hired with the big boys and actually making decent money "starting out" in a dying industry. 10 year 100,000 mile warranties suck for mechanics. I'm a graduate of Wyotech and they didn't push us to get our ASE's at all (thanks a lot...) because the reality of it is, they only care about what you did on a rigged test. Then again, I persued a job in the welding industry and that's worked great for me (so I have Wyotech to thank a little bit for the welding).

...I was thinking of going for the cert to convert cars to alternative fuels too, that would have its advantages.

ive' heard it said that ASE actually stands for Ask Someone Else emoji

good goin' though man, how was your experience with UTI?

You can say that again. Shit, working for GM, our 3 year, 36k mile warranty sucks. I make no fucking money on warranty conerns, especially the fact GM lowered warranty labor rates AGAIN. Not to mention, did you know they have extended warranties out too? Not many ppl even know about those. Yea, buy a new or used car, and the sales dept sells you a extended warranty so when your OE is up, you are still covered in some area's...yea, all those companies pay warranty time as well. Sucks, but hey, I love this field.

Congrats on you ASE's man. I took all my tests when I got out of school and passed them all but HVAC because I didnt have enough time to finish it. I signed up again for the fall testing, and passed it. I am 22, and am a ASE Master Tech. Not really a bragging point, I am just proud of it. I pushed myself hard enough to make it this far. I also have many GM cert's. Cool thing about working for the dealership is they pay for all GM training/testing, and they paid for all my ASE's when I took them. Turbo8u is right though, shops dont really care about ASE's...I got a whopping $1.00 raise when I got all mine, haha.

Anyway, congrats man, you should be proud of yourself, those tests arent the easiest ya know. emoji

Edit, turbo8u, we arent mechanics, we are "technicians." emoji
