Despite what he says I thought it was an awesome city with some great people there. I was there during the worst of it, and I was amazed at how cheerful people were. Do you know what side of town your going to be living on yet? Kenner isn't a bad area, most of the north east areas escaped major devastation so they are probably pretty much normal. If your not staying there long, you'll definitely enjoy it.

If your looking at crime rates they are reflecting the period of time immediately post-katrina where they laid off the entire police force of NOPD. Like I said, the outskirts are awesome places, I want to move there when I'm done with school. For at least a few years.

IMO, you're going to be hard pressed to find a better place than Texas. There's a reason why Texas gets to fly its flag above the American flag. Texas is just awesome.
However, should you end up in NOLA, it's not a complete loss. You can catch a cab home from Mardi Gras, 311 Day is a local event (biggest 311 show of the year, if you're into them), and you can even chill with Lootie.

New Orleans isn't that bad if you know where and where not to go. The city park is huge and has lots to do and there is always the riverwalk and bourbon street. I live in Gulfport, Mississippi. Which is like 45 minutes from New Orleans. I don't know how the tuner crowd is down there since the storm, but about 2 years back the crowd from around here went to play with some people from Slidell(which is just north of New Orleans across Lake Ponchatrain, or however you spell it)and there seems to be some pretty nice stuff down there. Give me a shout sometime when your down there and you can come meet up with us in Mississippi where there are too many 600+ domestics and 400+ hondas. Also a couple skylines, supras, nsx's, rx-7's and crazy shit like that. Actually the beginning of December there is a meet for the MS gulf coast, New Orleans, and Mobile crews so we can meet up and have some fun. There is plenty to do so don't worry about finding stuff to do.

Yeah I hate to be like this about something so serious, but New Orleans is still where I will end up. I have found some really nice 1 bedroom lofts in the uptown/garden district that might break me but at least it's not the ghetto.
I think a hand cannon is going to be purchased for home protection before I move down there though.

I grew up in Destrehan which is about 15 miles west of NO. Once you get out of the ghetto and projects of new orleans its a pretty damn nice place to live. Now I live across Lake Ponchatrain in Hammond so that i can go to school at Southeastern. I will say this much, I have been to a lot of other cities and there isnt a single one that has more shit to do than New Orleans. And dont listen to anyone that says the city hasnt come back since Katrina. All that storm did was clean out the city . Yes there is crime, but you show me one city that doesnt.

Uptown has some nice nightlife, better than the quarter, but less known to the tourists. Enjoy drive thru bars and 24 hour liquor stores. No open container laws and cops that would rather escort you home than pull you over for a DUI. The garden district didn't get hit hard from the storms so should be in pretty nice shape. Your probably not far from Magazine ST... pretty nice place from what I remember. Your not far from the Quarter either, so if you don't mind the smell of piss and shit, your free to party there, just watch out as not to venture into the gay district.
