#27512, "New Job (looonnnnnggggg)"
Sep-23-07 01:22 AM by eclipzGST

Some of you may know that sometime within the next 2 yrs, all the depts that I take care of at work will be moving to Mexico. I've been working for this place for 13 yrs know and worked my way up from a lowly factory worker to presently running 4 depts with about 35 people beneath me. I was pretty worried about my future having just bought a house and am used to making "decent" money and having plenty (sometimes too much) overtime. Quitting or taking a lay-off was pretty much out of the question since if I went somewhere else, I'd have to start over at the bottom again making crap for money and doing shit work.
I have no secondary education and all my experience isn't worth shit because other places hire within for jobs like mine.
A job just opened up as a molding setup/process guy in another part of the factory where they do all the injection molding. It's the same paygrade so I figured I'd give it a shot rather than wait until the end and get porked with some bullshit job and a pay cut or a lay off. I also thought the experience would help if I left the factory.
I trained with someone for a few days and realized how much I really HATED factory work. I decided to take a break from the training and go back to my regular job to think about it a little more.
A day or 2 later, theres an email sent out about an exempt job opening up in the office part of the plant for a Technical Support Specialist. Most of the job entails answering calls and getting information about different products or helping customers with issues they are having with our products. It's like nothing I've ever done before, but, it's 1st shift(YAY!!! I can finally go to the track!) It's exempt (no punching a time card) and, I keep the same pay minus my shift differential.
So, I said fuck it and sent a letter of interest and a copy of my resume.
A shave, haircut and 3 interviews later, I have the job. emoji
With my present job, I was at my ceiling with advancement and pay. This new job is a lot more visible, cap on pay is almost 2x what I'm making now and I also have the opportunity for advancement when openings are available. Having an hour lunch break, not having to wear safety glasses and not getting covered in dust or grease from touching something are bonuses too.
I'm psyched. GO ME!! hehe

My condolences on the shave, man. That sucks. Fight the establishment!

Congrats, Tony! Certainly sounds like an excellent opportunity. Nice job opening that door.

I just found out that the other job that I was training on was filled from outside the company. Good thing I didn't keep training cause I wouldn't have ended up with it anyway.
Listening to my gut and going with the office job was a good decision after all. emoji

i am glad to hear that everything went fine for you! I am kinda stuck in the same situation, I am very smart at my job, but there is no advancement unless the guy in charge dies and you have other people that have been in the company longer that would be able to fill his shoes in a heartbeat. I could go to another company, but i would prolly start out as a agent again and make crap for pay. I am glad to hear that you went with your gut feeling!!

And remember, with everything you do, ask yourself, is this good for the company? Oh yeah, and Friday is Hawaiian shirt day, so, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt, mkay?

I am in a similar situation right now. I am currently in a crappy job building freaking aircraft carriers. (Yea it sounds cool and all but it SUCKS) The way the company is organized, there is no way to advance without spending some quality time under someones desk if you catch my drift.

But (the good part) I recently was informed of a job opening in my father-in-law's office and I decided to check it out. I went for a visit to the office this past weekend and got a chance to talk to some of the people there. I spent a day on the job with one of the people in the position I would be applying for. It was great. Well waaaaay better than the crap I'm doing now. I would be a copier service tech. So I would take calls and go fix copy machines. There is much room for advancement within the company which is a big plus from where I'm at now. I would get to dress up in nice clothes and a tie every day instead of freaking thrift store clothes that get destroyed in a weeks time at my job now. Oh and the greatest part is that the company wants you to represent them well when you are out on the road so they give you up to $450 a month on top of your regular pay so you can buy a new car!!! The only catch is that the car has to be less than 5 years old.
I don't think I will have a problem meeting those requirements. LOL

So yea. Being a copier service tech might not sound like much too some of you guys on here but I am still young and it is a foot in the door to a very successful company that I have the potential to advance very quickly in so it means a lot to me.

But anyhow thats enough about me.

Congrats on getting the position!!!
Peace

It is the path of least resistance that makes rivers and men crooked
