#26866, "Any good majors that will turn into good, high paying jobs?"

I'm wondering pretty much what the title says. Is there anyone majoring in business in college. I'm looking into business admin. especially (attracted to the money hehe). What kind of courses do you have to take to get a 4 year degree? Hard, easy? (M)any math courses involved?

If not, what are the high paying majors that I should look into? Thanks guys!

I know im thread jacking, and ignoring your question, aswell as sounding totaly oldschool but... going into a major solely because of money is a big no-no.

Any who, be a professional athlete they get payed good. In all seriousness check: http://www.bls.gov Bureau of Labor Statistics FTW. Good luck emoji

^^^What he said.

If you go into a field because you can make good money you are going there for the wrong reasons. You need to find something fulfilling that you enjoy. Without that, your job will become a daily grind. Something that you do because you have no choice and you despise being at work.

I hate when people lecture me, so forgive me for this:

Look at it this way, If you are the BEST/GOOD at what you do, you will make good money. So why not just DO something you enjoy?

Why don't you just go to school to learn something. If you love what you do you'll never have to work another day in your life.

Lol, well I'm looking into fields of interest, such as business, and looking for well paying jobs within. I know Chemical engineering is #1 on the list of highest paid jobs today, but I'm sure not going to to that! I absolutely hate anything to do with engineering. Just wondering what pays good so I can narrow majors down from there because I hate seeing people who have a worthless major because they make no money and have just spent all that money on college and have to claw there way through life. Sorry *rant warning*.

Like others said, don't get into something b/c of money, do it b/c you like it. With that said, if you like business do yourself a favor and major in accounting. People with accounting degrees will get hired for all types of business positions, however, it does not work the other way around. If you have a finance degree, you're not getting a job in management or accounting, your stuck with finance.

All my accounting buddies and myself had at least 2 job offers before starting our senior year. Almost all of my friends with other business degrees had managed to scrape together a job before graduation, but their starting salaries ranged between 5k and 15k less than me not including my signing bonus emoji Look for the demand in your area too, in my area there are a TON of accounting firms and all the big 4 firms are present. I mean if you're in the middle of nowhere then you'd probably have to be willing to move somewhere. BTW if you're willing to work the long hard hours for a few years in a big 4 accounting firm (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PWC) you will have head hunters offering you jobs all the time. Also, if you stay in the Big 4 you'll double your starting salary in 5 years

edit: almost forgot to mention I'm posting this from my two weeks of training in Orlando; sitting in my $200/night room watching the US/Mexico game in HD on a brand new LCD tv after having shrimp and lobster for dinner. All of which is paid for by the firm emoji Ask me in a couple months if I'm just as happy though b/c busy seasons are supposedly killer. BTW I don't give a shit about basketball, but HD fucking rocks!

Hahaha, I was about to suggest engineering too emoji

Im a mechanical engineering major, and my favorite subject is Chem.

Chem + Engineering=Fun

Although Im doing M.E. because of the inductry i want to work in, and because I love being hands on and get down and dirty, not be stuck in a lab. Love what you do, then your vocation will be your vacation...or something like that.

***Warning, this is a bit lengthy*** You don't have to have a 6 figure job to make money. Put aside so much money a month, or per pay check, if you can. Start investing now, I'm not joking. Most places will waive an initial IRA deposit of $2000; If you sign up to have so much of each check deposited. There are also many other options. If you have a high-deductable insurance plan, open up an HSA. Most banks will let you start skimming your money and transferring it to an investment of some sort, after you reach a certain balance. Plus, these are interest bearing accounts, with some of the best rates you can find for savings. The trade-off, however is that if you make a withdraw not for a medical purpose, you generally incur a 10% penalty. Personally, I would suggest an IRA, as our generation is *most likely* not going to be able to rely solely upon Social Security. Additionally, Social Security is *generally* somewhere around a 2% return. *YIKES!* Set long term financial goals. You are NEVER too young to start planning your future. The longer you wait, the longer you'll have to work, as a general rule. Best of luck to you.

No worries, I was totally unprepared for the whole investment thing. It led to several headaches and yelling contests with the old man. Don't want anyone else to have to go through that.

I'm one step ahead. I've been investing since I was I was eleven! And I have a Roth IRA (interest isn't anything great), so I prefer long-term CD's.

Yes, business is what I'm looking into but definitely not accounting! Too boring and too many numbers for me! Great job for people who like it though because I hear all the time about people getting job offers every other day when they have a major in it. Anyway, I'm liking Business Administration... Anyone have any personal advice about it?

If there is a major in "being a brown nosing jackoff with no spine" that get it: I know lots of people that are making good money doing just that.

hell, I'm trying to save the money to have a nice cushion when I start my apprenticeship for car audio install. the apprenticeship pay sucks balls but the guys at the shop I'll be working at are averaging 6 figure incomes after 5 years, and I LOVE doing car stereo work.

6 figures doing car stereo installs is pretty impossible. Good luck though.

I did 2 years of tech school and got an associates in CompSci/Programming. Make over 50 a year which is enough to keep food on my table.

Hey an AS? that salary is nice. I've been looking into going into a PhD right after my BS because I have a lot of opportunities for GOOD payed research around here, it doesn't pay AS good as a real job but they are basically paying me to go to school, and if I don't make it through to the PhD, I get a Masters as a consolation prize emoji

book/school smart and job smarts are completely different. I did horrible in HS and dropped out of college but I'd doing just fine w/ work. Don't know what major would of gotten me more ready to be a service writer. If you're really pressed w/ a good major, anything w/ computers is good.

Dualgen2 is completely right. Thats why I joined a professional society, but thats the major problem with college graduates, they may be the most book smart individual in the world, but if they don't know how to apply their knowledge in the real world, or have a network with industry professionals when they graduate, it'll be tough.

Im from the school of why work for someone else and not yourself. as simple as this is im a few months away from opening mexican lunch kiosk at the army base I work at. we have a brand new px with a food court everyday from 11:30 to 1:30 it is packed 20 deep in line (we are 80% deployed) after talking to my affes(military retail) rep im looking at almost 40 grand a month with a 45% overhead. Not to shabby if you ask me. the best part is the start up cost less than 4 grand total. I have been working on this for just over a year. Im just waiting for paper work to clear. I have 5 years of school I just didnt finish. emoji

every time I've been in there there was a minimum of 2 cars that were worth more than I've earned in my entire life

I'm finally back in school to finish up my BA in political science. After that, it's off to law school for me. Mediocrity is not something I want to live with for the rest of my life. Hopefully I'll be able to get into real estate law. Real estate attorney's make great money, and Nashville is growing pretty rapidly. I am also considering dipping into the entertainment side of things, being in music city and all. It's just hard to get started out.

The good thing about being an attorney is, you are your own boss, unless you work for the state or some big corporate firm. Bad thing is, you have to take 7 years of school. (4 for BA and 3 for law school.)
