#26852, "Installing a garage door question."

I am putting up a new Garage door on my garage this weekend and have a question that someone can hopefully inform me about. Its about the center, over-head torsion spring. Now, I am not planning on replacing the springs because they are fine and arent broken. So to my question. The cable that attatches to the bottom of the garage door, if I lift the door up fully, it will obviously relieve some tension from those cables. But my question is, when I remove the eyelid cable from the door, will the pulley go nuts and unwrap it self and the springs go crazy? Or can I just put a set of vise grips just below the pulley on the cable to keep it in place until I attatch the cables on the new door?

Does anyone know about these cables and a safe way to remove them?

I was just going to have a local place put one on, but they want $1600 and the door I door I want is only $550.

lol... I hired a garage door place to replace my springs cause one of them broke. He put a bar into the hole on one end so he could unbolt it then take the tension off the spring. His little bar fell out and the spring knocked out 2 of his teeth. He was not happy about that.

I would take the tension off of the spring before you unhook those ends. Its not hard. Just get a piece of pipe that fits into the holes on the end of the springs. Use 2 pipes so one keeps it from spinning free and use the other by sticking it in the next hole and putting the other out. Just count how many time the springs goes around and retension them the same amount of turns.

LMAO!! That's one funny ass story. I can picture the whole thing happening in slow motion. What did you do afterwards? I can't imagine what you tell someone after some something like that happens.... Can I get you a glass of water? emoji

It just goes to show you that the wierdest things can hurt you real bad and even kill you. I installed my own alarm a few months ago and was shocked to learn that if you touch the wrong wires under the steering wheel your airbag can deploy and kill you.

lol... yeah the first thing I said was, oh damn thats gonna leave a mark. lmao That was before I knew it had knocked out his teeth or I wouldnt of said it. I knew it hit him, but didn't think it hit him that hard. He was not very happy. He did ask for some water, put his teeth in his truck and went back to replacing the springs after about 20 minutes.

Its one of those situations where you don't know how what to do. I didn't laugh at him until after he left, but the entire time he was here I couldn't believe he was actually gonna finish the job.
