#24773, "Any runners in here?"
Jun-02-07 12:34 PM by totaleklipse97

Today I ran my first official race. I've been training on and off since the snow left the ground in early march. Despite a surgery a month ago, and the two weeks off after I've been training 4-5 days a week for the last month or so. I have to admit I was fairly nervous this morning. Woke up at 5am, not quite my idea of a great time having to go to bed at 9pm on a friday night. My 10k (6.1 miles) race started at 7:45 am. We started at the National College Football Hall of Fame, and ran thru Downtown, and into Notre Dame University. The finish line was at the 50 yardline of the Stadium. You really couldn't have asked for a more unique finish. Running thru the tunnels and out onto the field just the same as the football players do before every game. Most of the race was along the river, onto a long uphill climb. Ended up running one of my better times at 50 minutes and 33 seconds. I'll definately look to better that time by the end of the summer and run a few more events.

Run to the store and get me a pack of smokes. emoji
I used to run back in HS jusy for fun. Did a couple 5k's. My stepdad and I would do 5mi loops all the time. He talked me into doing a 10k with him once And I ended up with the shits about a mile from the finish. Spent 15 min in the woods and then walked the rest of the way. lol

Wow thats pretty good. Its definitly real good in general, i would be pretty proud of a time like that. You would have to carry my ass after the first mile.

What did you have surgery for this time? Didnt you have to go for surgery from work last summer?

They just posted the standings. I finished 249 overall out of 924 total runners and 188 out of 496 males. I finished overall 13th in my age group out of 36. Definately will be doing much better next year. To put it in perspective the #1 overall ran a time of 30 min 36 sec, and the top 100 finishers all finished within 45 minutes. So the 100-200 group was pretty close in times, within 4 minutes of each other.

Awesome...I would die if I had to run 6.1 miles.

I have however bought a mountain bike and been riding it around 10 miles a day. I love it. Lost a few pounds already and it isnt nearly as tough on your body.

haha yea im a runner. i ran a 10k in long beach at 2 am. i was friggin shitfaced and had no idea where my friends were so i ran home. that was 6 miles from downtown LB to the Long beach state dorm. on another occassion, i tried running from huntington beach to long beach (about 15 miles) at 1am but was pulled over by some cops a mile into it. apparently i was drunk at this time as well. lol

i used to be a runner back in HS and loved it. i ran in the 800m and PRd at 2:04.57. im gunna start training for some 10ks and half marithons sooner or later. i just need to get away from the college drunken nights of running emoji

running through the tunnel and endin on the 50 yrd line must have been bad ass btw

Hmm... i dont run competitively, but i do lots of cardio. Three times a week i do an hour of running, i switch up speed/incline a lot to keep the body guessing, but on average in the hour, i do about 5-6 miles. So i can run as far as you, just not nearly as fast lol.

I need to mix up my training more than I do. I was looking into a few more 10k's and a 1/2 marathon this year. Kinda tough to do inclines around here because everything is so flat. Do you run stairs or find hills to run up and down?

I mix it up a little. I lift at golds 5 days a week, and two of those days, i use the machines after lifting. One day i do elyptical(sp) and another, i use the treadmill. on saturday, since i dont lift, i go to a local middle school where they have really nice terraces, and i run up and down those.

Ya, I still lift about 6 days a week. It's hard to run, and gain muscle mass at the same time. I'm toting around 195lbs while most of those runners are about 150lbs. I'm not big on running on treadmills, even though i've heard many times they are good for improving and teaching you to run at a constant pace.

Yeah, but i dont do the constant pace thing. I do HIIT, high impact interval training. Its mainly for weight loss. I gain as much muscle as i can during the fall/winter, then i start running to burn the extra fat, while lifting, to keep as much muscle as possible. I'm not a big guy, i stand at almost 5'6", and while cut, weigh about 135-140. I'm at 150 right now, trying to lose that extra 10.

I ran track in HS but that was for sprinting. Never ran anything over 400m TIMED, except for doing the mile once as a freshmen (5:50). Not bad for being 14 years old 5'6 and 119 pounds. I don't think I'd last a mile now.

I run quite a bit but don't race much. I like to run longer distances and I'm not too concerned with speed work.

Usually do between 18-30 miles per week. Most runs are between 4-9 miles @ 8:45 a mile average.

If you like to run, grab a Garmin 305 gps watch. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
