#23931, "I haven't seen a tornado like this in a decade..."

Anyone who lives in Kansas has no doubt heard ALL about this one. It's shit like this that brings out the Kansan in me. I've actually been to Greensburg. In fact, I took Vanessa through there less than four months ago. If it had been daylight, we would have stopped to tour the hand-dug well they have there. (It was located below the water tower in the pictures.)

Anyway. Serious shit in Kansas this past weekend.

Dude... dont they go through this every couple of years? I dont know... I kind of have mixed feelings, im like "whoa, that is some fucked shit right there" but then again when I look at the pics some how I get the feeling that they built these houses to be destroyed again, and they where expecting it. Sorry if I come off as an asshole, but thats just what feel. Prayers to all the people, RIP for those who lost their lives.

Wow, I can't imagine what it would be like for a tornado to take out my house, would be just terrible. Prayers go out to the people in Kansas.

that's so sad! I feel for all those unfortunate people. Wow.

We try as hard as we can to conquer the world with technology and our wisdom. Then we get knocked down a peg or two.... to remind us all that nature is stronger than all of us.

Well, it's not exactly like those people who build on the banks of the river that floods in the same place every ten years or so. There is no way of knowing when/where a twister will strike. Basically, what you're suggesting is that anyone who's home has been destroyed by a tornado pack up and move. Right?

Where are they going to move? Like I said, big difference between living in Tornado Alley and on the banks of the Mississippi.

My perspective is that the important thing to remember is that, aside from life itself, everything can be replaced. Homes, cars, furniture, etc. can all be bought anew with money from insurance. For that reason, the only people who I would consider being less than intelligent are those who live in that tornadic hot spot between Wichita and OKC and don't get insurance.

Tornados happen all the time and they happen randomly. Mankind's affect on the global climate is changing the way our weather patterns do their thing. For that reason, it's imperative that research into tornados continues. The sooner we can predict them (if we ever can), the better the chances of survival. Forget about the property. Saving lives is most important.

Finally, just to give you some idea of the scale of this guy...

Consider the damage path this guy left behind him back in 1991 (when I lived there).

Now look at this picture again. This is a tornado over 1.5 miles wide that stayed on the ground for something like two hours. To give you some idea of scale, the tornado in the picture above is barely wider than one of the roads you see in the picture below. Most tornados will last a few minutes at most. So short, in fact, that tornado chasers often find they can't get close enough to the tornado before it's gone. This bastard just sat there and scrubbed the city off the map. You may very well see pictures of blacktop and concrete being sucked right off the roads with something like this.

Tornados this big that stay on the ground this long are very rare. Most of the time, they will hop around and take a few passes down some streets in these towns. This one just steamrolled Greensburg.

All I'm trying to say. Talk about reaping the whirlwind...
