#20432, "I got in a fight at the dog park..."
Jan-28-07 09:23 PM by eclipsekaiser

Saturday morning I brought my Westie to the local dog park. Since my Westie is technically too large to be considered a small dog, and judging by the many poodles/toy dogs in the small dog park, I elected for the large park.

Right when I walked my Westie in the park, a Boxer came running up to display its dominance. Normally my dog has no problem in larger parks, as he grew up with a Pit Bull, and a GreyHound mix.

The moment I took off his leash, the Boxer jumped on top of my Westie and started making this viscious growling noise. As soon as this happend, Snowman made this yelp that I presume he was being bit. At that instance out of concern for my dog, I starting fisting the Boxer on the head. The first swing grazed the neck of the boxer, while the second connected fully on the side of its head. It took me approxiamtely 6-8 solid hits for the boxer to let up enough so that my Westie can get away. In my rage, I connected 3 more times before realizing what I was doing.

It must have look like a UFC style beating, because the owners friend came running up screaming "that is enough, you don't need to beat the dog". Still in my tunnel vision, I glanced at the tennis ball throwing stick thingy that he had in his hand and thought it was a weapon. Instinctively I grabs my pocket knife (yes Dan and James, you know which one...the one dubbed S&W 50 Caliber Homeland Security Edition), and flipped it open. The dude must have saw it and stopped with a quickness.

The guy repeated what he said angerly...in which I must have screamed "your dog attacked mine". He shut-up real quick.

I folded up my shank, and immedately went to find my Westie. There was a little blood on his fur, from a light scratch. Overall, I think he was more shaken up that anything else.

After a quick assessment I immediately put my dog on his leash. I could tell the Owner of the boxer was angry, but knows she was in the wrong.

My GF at the time was in the car finishing off her McDonald's breakfast, come walking up asking what was wrong. I update her on the situation, and she commented on how people had this scared look on their faces as they passed each other at the entrance. My GF suggested to bring in the authorities, but I elected not to as the matter was over, and no real damage was done.

We quickly left the park and went home.

Overall, I felt bad that the boxer took such a beating (I think I may have fractured the boxer's skull) , but am glad that my dog is in one peice. Owners at an off leash park need to pay more attention to their pets, and less socializing with familar friends. I'm more pissed off that my arms are now sore from the whole ordeal.

Anyone else have similar incidents that they want to share.

Not any fights but alot of verbal confrontations at the dog park I go to. People just let their shit head non-trained dogs just run rampant and attack other dogs.

Umm, don't go back to that park... ever. I agree with the first reaction you had, dog was attacking yours, do whatever you can to preserve your pet. After it released though, should have dropped it. Think of it from an outside perspective, you continued to beat an animal when it did not present a danger, then brandished a weapon towards a person. It's probably best that you didn't contact the authorities, as now you'd have a criminal record.

Wow that is crazy. My dog is not a very socialable dog so I have never taken him to a park like that before. At least you saved your dog from harm so good job man.

i wouldnt worry too much if you hurt the boxer. We have an english pointer that ive seen run full tilt through the garage and smash his head into a table saw motor. THAT looked brutal. he just shook it off and kept running.

For some reason this reminded me of the movie True Lies where Arnold takes out two dogs with his bare hands.

Sucks to hear your dog may have gotten hurt. Their head's are hard as rocks so I don't think you did anything major.

Thank God someone else saw something wrong with this story. I understood the part where you beat the dog up, up untill you kept hitting it after it was off your dog. Then you pulled a knife on people for basically no reason? Jeez dude.

When I was still a bun in the oven. My parents bred Saint Bernards. One day our neighbors doberman got loose and pined my mom 8 months pregnant to the wall of our house snaping and growling. Champ snapped a leather collar and tackled the dobie, and riped out its neck in one bite saving my mom. Later that day when my pops come home the neighbor tryed to fight my dad. My pops mopped the floor with him sending that dude to the hospital. This was on a marine base so when the MPs came all the neighbors told them what happend. The guy that did it lost his rank and had 3 months of extra duty.

so the moral of the story is dont fuck with a marine or his dog.

Dammit dude, I'm glad you didn't come after me that evening I dropped the catcon over the fence onto your patio! emoji

Was that the dog park up on Mountain View?

My GF and I had an experience there once. Our 45lb Border Collie "Mr Skunk" was trotting happily around the big dog side, but there wasn't anyone else there. One thing to keep in mind is that once a long time ago he found that there was enough space between two bars in one corner to squeeze through, and often tries to head in that direction if we let him. We were in the opposite corner playing with him, and all was good. Then, jogger with his German Shepherd came running along the sidewalk next to the park. Our dog stopped, saw the other dog, and beelined straight across the park to the gap. We saw this, and I instantly figured there was no way I could get there in time, so ran straight down to the gate, which was closer. In that time, Skunk had got through the fence, and ran right up to the other dog barking. He is not an aggressive dog by any means, just excited. But the Shephard was having none of it and in an instant had flipped Skunk over on his back in and held him there. I had changed my course by this time to the fence directly in line between us, swung over it (prolly 5 ft high or so), landed, and sprinted the remaining distance to get my dog. The Shephard must have been very well trained, cos he never hurt Skunk, but totally had control over him. I pulled him away and calmed him down. The other owner was pretty reasonable about it, thankfully. Mr Skunk was a little jazzed up but otherwise fine, even though he just got his little furry ass whupped.

I don't think pounding the dog on the head did anything. Dogs shrug off pain a lot differently than we do.

One time one of our pits got out in the pasture and attacked the biggest bull it could find and tackled that mo-fo. By the time I caught up to him (jumped barbed wire fence, bare-footedly ran through the pasture and waded through possibly snake and 'gator infested water) he had a hold of the bull's bottom lip and had him pinned. I pulled and pulled, but he wouldn't let go, so I got him in the headlock and pounded the center of his skull to knock him out, or at least daze him. But after several minutes of pounding, he didn't let go. My brother showed up in the truck with his .45 and a stun gun. He squeezed off several rounds of the 45 next to the dog to scare him, but he didn't budge. Stun gun to the rib cage and he only gripped harder. Stun gun to the neck produced a nasty growl. Stun gun to the balls and he let go.

We finally made it back to the house to assess the situation. My hand looked like I just got out of a fist fight, swollen and immovable, and my shirt was covered in (cow) blood. Dog had a broken tooth and that's it. He did seem mighty wore out after the whole ordeal, but if I had a stun gun to the nuts, I'd be fucked up too.

Moral of the story, pounding your fist on a dog doesn't do anything unless it's small enough for you to knock it out. A boxer's not much different from a pit (general size-wise), so aside from giving it a mild headache, you probably didn't do much but cause it to try and figure out what the hell was going on.

You know what, I think you did the right thing. If a dog was snapping at mine i would be pissed too, Dogs can take a beating and are way tougher than they look. Then the guy approached you aggressivly with something in his hand and you reacted, especially if you were coming down from an already stressful/defensive situation. People need to get control of their pets/dogs, there is no need for dogs acting that way.

Shit dude, gotta love socal.

Fenix says she tells everyone never to go to an offleash dogpark cause NOBODY takes the time to properly socialize their dog, train it, and watch over it the whole time. Bad shit is bound to happen with a bunch of badly socialized pack animals from different packs no matter what breed or size.

She recommends this book to find a new place to walk:
http://www.dogloverscompanion.com/guidebooks/california.html or
http://www.dogloverscompanion.com/guidebooks/losangeles.html

And I agree on the boxer/pain thing. Those dogs enjoy pummeling each other, and a punch isn't going to phase them.

As far as pulling a knife, you did it in self-defense and put it away when the threat was neutralized. That's what you carry it for, and it's 100% legal. That's also an intensely American and human right, it's called the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, and FUCK anyone who suggests you might go to jail for it.

Glad Snowman's ok and things worked out.

No this was In Corona, off of Pierce. Very nice park. I've been going there for the last 2 years.

The blade is legal (just under 3", but a super wide 2.24" with a special notch cut into the top of the blade). It was all a reflex... Dude should not have run up with a red stick like object in his hand... I found out the guy brought his PitBull at the time.

I openly welcome them to call the authority at the time. In fact I should have... but then the Boxer could have been hauled off to be put down. The rules posted outside the park clearly states " No Aggressive dogs allowed", and "Owners are responsible for thier dog's actions"

Today I washed Snowman, and noticed he had a few scabs forming under his collar. I must have missed it during the assessment. I hope it is not the result of deep punctures.

For those of you that know me, Snowman is like a little child to Cyndi and I. Watching him get attacked like that made me react.
Imagine someone taking a bat to your EVO, 2gnt, or family member for no reason.
