#1935, "Computer is acting wierd"

On top of it being all screwed up because it is an HP a210n running windows 98 (long story). It is making really strange sounds.

Do hard drives make a bad noise when they are about to crap out? This is a high pitched sound, like of like a TV, but much louder... it comes and goes as it pleases.

Any ideas here?

Any computer can have problems.

Anyways, it could be a fan. Does it make the noise when you are putting load on the HD or does it randomly do it at idle also? If it comes and goes randomly then my guess would be a fan. I always get bad fans that make stupid noises. Probaby doesn't help at all though.

Ok, sorry I wasn't helpful, I just couldn't help myself. If it's not the fan then it could be you are right with the hard drive. Does it have any other problems? You say it comes and goes, does it see to be affected by how long the computer has been running?

You might want to back up anything of importance. I had a similar problem with my computer making alot of noise when it was loading programs or large files. I ended up having to start from scratch with it several times, and then just got rid of it.

And, really not trying to start a debate, but why would you want to shoot yourself in the balls before owning a Mac? I've had mine for two years now and haven't had any problems with it. Should your current computer crap out I suggest looking at Macs, if of course you can do without certain programs.

Good luck man, hope it works out, otherwise you won't have 2gnt anymore.
