#1807, "Eclipse article?"

Hey I was wondering if anyone has that article saved thats been floating around the net forever, I think it was in Super Street originally...
The one that started..."Eclipse tuners are a strange sort.."
And something about living in a world of wastegates and "mention the word chrome and they'll drop a boot to your skull?"

Ive been looking around but cant find it anywhere..

December 2002(I think) issue of Super Street, page 76

Eclipse tuners are a strange sort. They prefer stock wheels and paint. They don't like talking about wings or color matching side skirts and interiors. And they wouldn't be caught dead checking out a Wings West catalog. Sure, occasionally you might spot a shy intercooler hiding behind an Eclipse front end or a three-inch exhaust jiggling out the back, but for the most part youd be lucky to see hubcaps. After all, thats added weight, you know. Eclipse tuners are performance obsessed sleeper fanatics who dream only of downpipes, exhaust gases, and wastegates. Their cars aren't pretty, but have the ability to spank you silly on the highway. In other words, Eclipse tuners write checks their cars can cash. they don't spend money on 12inch subs or amps. Systems only add to the weight and decrease performance. Mention the word chrome and they might drop a boot to your skull.

I was looking for the actual article on SuperStreet, but I've gotta go to a meeting...

Doesn't this exclude half our membership? I'm not pointing fingers or anything but I've seen a shitload of subs and body kits on Eclipse's of all models. I think maybe this is more relevant to first-gen Eclipse's.

^^^Agreed. There is a definite contingent of "2nrs" among the DSM crowd, though we normally ostracize them emoji.

Also I remember that article well. I think the car in question featured therein was from Baltimore. I remember at the time trying to track the gguy down but kind of forgot about it. Still a great article though. Sums up my view on cars very well.

DSMpurity, imo. Ah well. Go ahead and say nasty things about me because I have the good taste to not bastardize my exterior with gaugy urethane appendages and my interior with a metric ton of just-begging-to-be-stolen audio equipment and video games. emoji

That's perhaps the best thing I ever read in Super Street. (Although, if you had a subsciption a few years back, you might come across a couple letters I had published in there.)

the only thing i disagree with (well 1/2 on) is the comment about "their cars may not be pretty" they have GOT to be talking about the 1g's cuz there is noone in their right mind who would say that about a 2g. and even so...the 1g's arent even that bad. i could think of a whole lot of other sporty cars that look much worse.

as far as the comment about dsm purity. the guy is talking about whats its like for the hardcore DSM enthusiest. i mean..those into audio and all that are more into the styling of things..but DSM's have always been about makin the power. sure, there are people who build all out show cars or rice them out, but what he is talking about is the roots of the DSM movement.

Thanks. That's this guy with a car that's running again, shitheads. emoji

My letters that got in had something to do with FNGs on the SS staff being paid with Flamin' Hot Chee-tos. They had an article where they were talking about their two new guys, who happened to have the same last names as Eddy Murphy and Dan Akroyd's characters in Trading Places. emoji

I completely agree. IMO the best looking DSM's have factory bumpers, factory spoiler, lowered and tinted with a nice FMIC in the front to top it all off if it's turbo. The only thing I will ever do to my car will be adding a 97-98 Talon front bumper and 95-96 TSi side skirts.

I contributed to the wiki!

98 Dodge Neon R/T
93 Saab 900 Turbo Commemorative Editon #86 of 325 (sold)

When i first started doing my car i didnt agree with any of that. The people in my city are all about appearance and it used to be they wouldnt pay a second thought to you unless you had your car riced out.

Soon my friends were bringin out their 1gs and stomping people and now everybody fears the DSM.

As soon as my car started coming together though, I was like OH SHIT WTF have i done?!

Thats why I went out and bought my 2g GS, turbo wing, black wheels, tinted windows, very clean looking, and i love it. I catch myself staring at it sometimes in awe.

Now i just take my pink car for what it is. I already have all the parts so i keep them, but I dont need them anymore. I kick myself in the ass everyday for not taking that money i spent on the exterior and putting it in the motor.

And for the record...
My interior is falling apart on the pink car haha. Except my cf headliner (thank you topshop group buy!)

exactly why i do my mods for ME...not for others to get attention. im not baggin on you in the least..but you make an excellent point and warning. if you build your car to attract the attention of a bunch of ricers...you will more than likley be kicking yourself in the ass for doing so in the long run.

and dont feel too bad...i think alot of people want to mod the hell out of a car visually..esp when young. but after a bit, most grow out of that phase and start appreciating cleaner OEM lines.

AMEN man lol. I remember when I was a little younger, I wanted an eclipse and wanted to put a blitz kit on it. Now I will have it no other way besides OEM.

That quote from SS is awesome. Should be posted on like the main page lol.
