I think Mothers works pretty good. I've never tried anything else so I couldn't tell you if it's the "best" or not.

Mythbusters did a thing with coke & aluminum/tin foil, but I think that was for cleaning oxidation and surface rust off aluminum & chrome.

It did better than the other polishers.

Start with 600 grit sand paper, work your way down to 1200 grit wet sanding. When you get it all nice and smooth, use the mothers mag and aluminum polish.
Worked great on my turbo when I did it! emoji

Two suggestions.

Simichrome Polish. Used in a lot of manufacturing plants to polish optical grade plastics and dies. I used this shit on a Swiss Army Knife back in the day and turned it into a mirror. I actually walked out of the plant with a tube one day just because it was that good. Might not be easy to find locally.

FlyinESi showed me this stuff last week. Looked pretty damn cool and I bet you can get it anywhere. I will have him check this thread and relpy. Txtmsg sent.

Yep, there is some stuff called Never Dull. It is at any Checker/AutoZone and it comes in a silver can.

Looks like this...
http://www.nevrdull.com/

But silver, not blue.

You put a coat on, rubbing the wadding all over to take off any excess dirt or corrosion, let it haze, and wipe it clean with a terry cloth.

You have to go to at LEAST 1000 grit. 1200 is better. That will make it super smooth and will look flat grey with no "lines". Then you hit it with the polish. I did my compressor housing this way and a couple BOV's. The results were always the same. Beautiful.
I also have access to simichrome. They use it to polish the lens molds at work. I didn't mention it before because I don't think it's sold at chain stores. It does work good though. emoji
