#1222, "2gnt on the main page"

Is there a background to the car shown on the first page? I was thinking maybe we could like feature a differently 2gnt every month or something with some pics and a mods list or something like that. Just a thought.

I was totally thinking that too today. whoa.

If every member submitted a regulated size photo and it changed every day or something. That would be cool.

But it would be too much work for the mods I think emoji

I don't have access to those features or I would offer to do it for Dino. Maybe, instead of replacing the one image, there could be a separate image, perhaps a bit larger, near it, that would be 2GNT of the month.

And this belongs in Suggestions, FNGs.

This has been brought up before. I think that car is just some pic they found, not anything special. And I don't think Dino wanted to mess with doing that. Let Brian do it Dino. He's good at that kind of stuff with the words and the pictures and what not.

For questions and concerns regarding the maintenance and administration of 2gnt.com.

The car currently up there used to belong to a member here by the name of spicyMitsu. The car was stolen in late 2003 and he hasn't been on the forum since early 2004. I did some mild chopping to it is all.

More important than the images used on the home page is the quality of the information on it. Some of that stuff is old. There's nothing wrong with that, but maybe you could freshen it up a bit and give something back to the community other than suggestions which translate into another piece of routine labor Dino or Jeff has to implement. Not saying there's anything wrong with making suggestions, but I just feel there are more important things to address. emoji

I was on Tuners this AM and there was a four month old thread asking about a DIY turbo system in which the OP was under the impression that some turbochargers don't need an oil feed or drain. This is, of course, completely true... for dead turbochargers in the scrap heap. A 2GNT Tuner commented that someone needs to write a tech article detailing the ins and outs of a DIY turbo system for a 2GNT to prevent this sort of thing in the future. I agree completely, only, why wait for someone else to do it?

If you really wanted to do something good for 2GNT.com, why not write an article about something like this? Thura and I are already working on putting together a very detailed handling guide, but how's about someone doing an aritcle on turbosystems? It doesn't have to detail how to tune a turbosystem or make a manifold. It would just need to detail all those components a person would want to consider in piecing together their own kit and whether or not it was a requirement, a good idea, or purely optional (along with why one might opt for whatever it is).

Yes, there is already a write-up on how to fabricate and install a DIY system, thanks to Chris, but there is an important step before installation and even before ordering parts - it's called component selection. New people could really benefit from information which would help them make their own decisons as to which turbo to buy.

Sticking to the format I came up with for the Power Stages, it would be a cakewalk for someone with a good, general knowledge of the subject, in my opinion. You list the part, offer a couple sentences on price range, throw in a difficulty number, and then share what you've learned on 2GNT over the years.

It doesn't have to be perfect. I guarantee you that, if you show 2GNT that you're trying to give something back and help out, 2GNT will not make fun of or belittle you for your efforts (DISCLAIMER - unless you're a complete fucking idiot emoji). We could (and should) have articles like this for turbosystems, nitrous systems, tuning, and even body kits.

Like I said, take a look at the sections on the home page and brainstorm what information you could share with new people. We can come up with a way to make it look pretty along the way or something.

We are 2GNT. We need to make sure that our community is known as the place to go for technical information on this platform. If we don't, some other forum will (and believe me, they're out there and aiming for that).

I, too, was thinking about this the other day so I was searching for pics of Eclipses and Talons to photoshop into one picture just to make the main site a little more exciting or something. Then I realized I only have MSPaint LOL. That's when some of you may have seen my thread about wanting to get Adobe Photoshop from someone on here..

Yes, substance beats style. But with all the skills possessed by this group, there is plenty of opportunity for the more artistic folks to dress up whatever hard info the gearheads can put together.

That said, it is important to adhere to clear, purposeful and restrained design priciples that do not distract the viewers attention from the content. Standard practices for good web design should be applied, such as:
- muted colours with good contrast
- appropriate image use (conservative in size, and only where needed)
- no wierd fonts
- no goddamn Flash
If you've ever heard of Edward Tufte's ideas on visualization, you'll see where I'm coming from.

One thing that would be immediatey useful is for people to check all of the links in the how-to's work, and that all the images are there. Whenever they are missing, try to contact the original author, and if that fails, see if they can be found on the Wayback machine (www.archive.org). Given that our cars are getting older, and some of the knowledgeable people move on to other pursuits, I believe it is very important to capture as much of the information as we can. We will not let 2GNT go to the wayside, like what happened to DSM.org.

There isn't much of a story behind that mainpage image. It was the one I liked the best at the time I was setting up the original site, and I thought the colour tint matched well with Mitsu's red diamonds logo.
