Yea, anyone else feel like that? I just had to go get some cortizone injections in my BACK today. Damn do I hurt now, and I thought this stuff was supposed to fix the pain, not make it worse. Oh yea long story short, went overseas in '04-'05, got blown up, sent to Walter Reed for 8 months, and I'm now back home still continuing medical care. Just wondering if any of the rest of you guys have had to have this done and wondering if extreme pain is part of the norm. I cant really do anything else right now but lay in bed and surf on here to try and take my mind off this crap.

I have actually had them done. Did you get the cortizone epidural injections or just normal injections. I had the epidural done and they injected cortizone directly into my back where I messed up 2 disks about 8 months ago.

I was pretty sore for the first 24 to 36 hours or so after mine. After that my back pain didnt go completly away, but it was a lot better. Only problem is the cortizone wears off. I would be just as sore again a month or so down the road. Im getting them done every 4 months. My insurance will only pay for 3 a year. Mine will take place until I decide to have spinal surgery to fix the area I screwed up. Since Im 26 years old Ill wait as long as possible to have the back surgery.

I never go to the doctor. Haven't been in years. I've never really had a reason to go though. Even if I did, I'd just walk it off or something because I won't go to the doctor for shit. I don't even like taking pills. If I have a headache, I'll let it go away on it's own.

That is some of the most ignorant shit I have ever read. Just wait for a real emergency one day.

Your epidural will hurt, as the tissue is already inflammed in the space. Adding fluids to this comparted space will aggitate the tissue even further. It will hurt, atleast for the first couple days. If it is numb, then they accidently injected into a nerve.

Same here. I've been twice in the last five years. Both times, I paid cash out of pocket (no insurance) and both times I was told that I had a cold or sinus bug and to take some OTC stuff from the Wal.

I've paid about $400 in the last five years on doctors cash out-of-pocket without insurance. The way I see, versus the $180/month hit to the paycheck in the company group plan, I've still saved $10,400.

Think about it. If your company hits you for only $100 per month for group coverage and your medical expenses are less than $1200 per year, then you're losing that extra money.

Only reason I don't do this with auto insurance is because 1) state law requires it and 2) adding comp and collision to the policy is only about $20/month.

I don't really ever go to the doctor's either.. I've had a broken tail bone, broken hand, and right now I think my rib is broken because it's sticking out LOL. None of which I went to the doctor for and they healed on their own. Maybe I should go for the rib though because it's been over a month...

so what happens when you have to make a trip to the ER or hafta be admitted? one nite in the ICU is gonna make $1200/year sound like an awesome deal. most people don't realize how expensive medical care is without insurance. i work in xray. did you know a single MRI costs about $1-2k. that's for ONE area. every area they look at is coded separately and incurs a separate charge. and medical fees are not something you can "shop around" for the lowest price. every single procedure and test has a nationally regulated price lists as well as coding and billing procedures which must be followed.

without insurance, one major medical emergency can put you in debt FOR LIFE... although people without insurance will probably refuse treatment resulting in a shorter lifespan anyways. so at least you won't be in debt for THAT long.

Ok, sorry guys I guess I was a bit vague(sp?) but I dont like getting into details unless I'm asked. Anyway, I went to Iraq in 04 was there till June 05 when I was injured due to an insurgent attack. I was in the drivers hatch of an armored personell carrier, also known as a M113 for all you military people. Got "blown up" by a 250lb arial warhead that was rigged under the road as a bomb. It launched 20,000+lbs of vehicle into the air and dropped it on its top. I ended up with 2 compression fractures in the T-spine coupled with multiple hairlines throughout most of my back, 2 disc herniations in the upper lumbar that have DDD, fractured pelvis on the left side due to shrapnel, colapsed left lung, diaphram ripped in half, lost my spleen, part of my pancrease, and almost all the blood in me (yea, death thought I tasted good!). There's a breakdown for those that were wondering.

By the way, the pain has gotten much better since FRI, I can move arround again so thats a plus emoji

Doctors are great....the good ones that is. Back? I've been in the Army and hurt my back. I have two stainless steel "pedical screws" 2.5 inchs long holding my L4/L5 together. Now, that shows you I know what I'm talking about with back pain....

I don't know what your problem is but when it comes to the back you have vertabre and disks in between each of them. You have nerves that come out of the spinal cord and go to each of the muscle groups of the body. Now, you pain usually comes when one of these nerves is pinched or pressed upon because of an injury or alignment problem. The injections are usually of the cortizone type and usually (are supposed to) relieve the pain. I would imagine that the meds are placed in the disk or surrounding area and do add volume to the area. It is possible that the meds were inserted and increased the pressure in the area which may have put even more pressure on the nerve in question. Have you had an MRI to show exactly where the problem is?

Sounds to me that you need to talk to your dr. Call him/her and let him know you symptoms. They will know better then you or I what the problem is.

I went for 5 years with therapy and all kinds of "you need more exercise/heat/cold therapy and you will be fine...." Bullshit, I went under the knife in 94 to have the rods put in and I've felt like a 21 year old ever since. "Nothing heals better then when cut with a knife!" is what my surgeon always told me. So far he was right.

Good Luck and get out of that love/hate relationship with your Dr. Communicate by calling him and keep him in the loop. He will help you but he has to know your in pain.

Mr. Tripp
Augusta, GA

I guess you hate me then. That's okay I'll get over it.

I kinda worry about some of you guys running without health insurance. Why do we insure our homes, our cars, our toys, but never ourselves? It's cool to pay out of pocket for basic clinic visits, IMO. But at least have some kind of coverage for catastrophic crisis. Financial advisors keep telling me to insure your income too.

Seriously, ICU bills can top $10,000-15,000 per day.

All I can say is thnk God for free healthcare in Canada. A couple years ago my sister was in a car crash (she was a passenger) and almost died. She spent 5 weeks in critcal care 4 of them were in a coma, 3 weeks in intesive care and another 3 or four in a regualr ward room. Add to that coutless MRI's, X-rays etc and I don't even want to know what it would off cost us if we were in the US.

Between our pulblic healthcare and our personal extended health coverage and Auto insurance it didnt cost us anything. Our extra insurance even paid for our expensese and income lost for the time she was in the hospital.

I think its dumb for anyone to think they dont need insurance.

Well, I must say that I completely agree with all of you saying that health insurance is a MUST. emoji I have seen SOME of the bills that good ole uncle sam has paid since I got back state side and I must say that were it not for this stuff being the military's responsiblity to fix and pay for, I would be in debt for the rest of my life. emoji

TriCare is no where near the best comprehensive coverage out there but its much better than paying the thousands of dollars out of pocket that has been required to get me to this point in my recovery. I still have a long way to go too! emoji

Also, I'm not realy saying that I hate all doctors, I'm just sick of going to 3+ appointments a week. This has been a VERY long road so far and, last friday when I started this thread was the one year aniversiary(yea cant spell) of the day I got injured. No offense to anyone and I truly am gratefull for the medical technology that we posess and the people trained to properly implement it. I know I wouldn't be alive right now were it not for those people being where the needed to be at the right time and God saving my ass. I'm just bitching cause I want my life back and its not looking like that's gonna happen any time soon emoji

Oh well, I may not be where I wanna be in life right now but, I do have a multitude of things to be thankfull for and believe me when I say I'm truly gratefull for the blessings in my life as well as the trials. Obsticles only make us stronger and wiser.

Ok, I'm done with my phylisophical rant. emoji My thanks go out to all of you that continue to support our soldiers, regardless of political standpoint. God bless

Very interesting. I was wondering about that. Especially liked this part:
1) make sure that you know exactly what your health insurance does and does not cover. You might want to make a change.
2) if you can afford it and your family is relatively healthy you might want to consider looking into an individual Health Savings Account (HSA) with a high deductible insurance plan.
3) seriously consider investing in long or short-term disability coverage especially if you have lots of bills and you are the only breadwinner. Plan ahead. Don't expect the government to bail you out.

I need to do all 3. Like yesterday. emoji

My brain surgery was almost completely covered by my work's insurance plan. The total cost was billed at over the price of a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo!

And I only spent 6 days in the hospital.

Even if you are healthy, don't think that you can get by without it. Imagine some loser punk in a ghetto civic runs a red light and t-bones you at an intersection. Then imagine having to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for putting you back together and rehabilitation.

And just having it isn't enough. Make sure you will have access to good care. I was able to get into one of the top medical facilities in the country with top notch doctors. Woulda been a different story if I would only have been covered to get treated by Dr Cletus at the Podunk Rural Medical and Veterinary Center.

Actually, I'm from Canada. I just live in the states now.

To be honest, for my particular condition I'm glad I was a US resident. I've heard lots of stories about it taking a long time to get healthcare in Canada now. That, and other things like underfunded facilities and brain-drain of good personnel to the US.

Within two weeks of the diagnosis, I was on the table at the UCLA Medical Center getting fixed. I talked to a few people who said it would have been different had I been up there instead...

Just be cause its free (Canada) or you get the cheap insurance (USA), it doesn't mean that you're 'covered'. The point is, best make sure you have done whatever you need to make sure you have the best options available to you.

A lot of people in Canada are still uninformed when it comes to health care and they end up waiting a long time or going to the first docotor they meet not neccessarily the best one. Its like anything else, you have to make the system work for you not the other way around.
