#44470, "Gulf Coast Oil Spill"

Yeah figured I would start something bout this.

I live on the Gulf Coast, Pensacola, Florida area to be exact. Whitest beaches in the country........atleast they were. BP has been taking their time trying to fix the problem while more oil gets pumped out into the gulf every minute. Whats worse is if it actually decides to make its way up the Mississippi. We'll be screwed if that happens. Personally, after the first week, someone should have stepped in and taken over regardless of what BP wanted. BP has denied any assistance from any other companies because they do not want to spend the money to attempt to salvage what is there. Two other oil companies said they could assist in slowing the spill by tapping into it at an angle and pumping what was coming out. Esimated cost was between 2 and 3 million. BP said no, they didn't want any help. A man said he could get 60% of the oil if not more but BP does not want to pay him to do so.

Needless to say, the beaches are gonna be covered in black globs of oil and if a hurricane hits, we're screwed.

Talk about some greedy SOBs.

Florida is the nations largest fishing state; Our state economy is going to get fucked six ways from Sunday. I hear you about oil + hurricane. That would be awful. Which reminds me... I need to go buy plywood.

740 - Whats worse is that they had a cap to use....course it didn't work. then they decided to use a smaller cap.....well of course it didn't work.

They refuse to let anyone help. Personally, someone needs to just step in, take control from them and fix it. EPA isn't handling it like they should either......correct me if I am wrong on this please.
Yeah me too. I just got this house and I have to get new panels. Our fishing industry is screwed. We can't go to hardly any local restaurants that use the fish from the gulf cause its screwed. This is worse than the whole Exxon thing. Its getting worse too.

Well they have finally managed to get the oil pumping into a tanker but the damage is done. The oil that has already spilled out has damaged the wildlife preserves in LA and is estimated to spread all the way to Port St Joe of Florida. The white beaches of the pandhandle are now covered in globs of oil and a nice sheen has appeared in the water. They say there is a possibility that it will affect the drinking water for those affected by the spill.

Here's an article with more info.

This is what happens when we spend more time paying attention to our greed and nothing else. If we were moving in the right direction, we would be independent of oil and this would have never happened. But, they have to make their billions off of us. We all have that same mentality to an extent. Humans will continue to destroy the world and everything living in it until we rid ourselves of greed and material things. As long as we get ours, fuck everyone and everything else in this world (seems to be the norm). It's just plain sad to me that innocent creatures of this world have to pay the price for our greed.

We will never be "independent of oil". Sorry.

Unfortunately we are our own creaters. We have done this to ourselves by allowing for the people in office to control us. We are this nation and we are supposed to be the ones in control but it is more like a monarchy than anything else. We elect to have these people in office then they do stupid stuff like this and we're supposed to roll over and take it up the a$$ with no lube. Sorry but I love this area too much to deal with this BS they are handing out. This whole mess could have been taken care of within two weeks and all this damage could have been minimum but look at it now.

We are always going to depend on the importation of everything we have, oil included. Too many companies are outsourcing to other countries and that is also where we get a majority of our stuff from. Its easier for us to blame someone else than to own up for our own mistakes. Lets blame the fast food industry for all the obese people in our country, lets blame tv for teaching our 8 year old kids about sex, lets blame MA-17 games for teaching our children about violence.

Honestly, I don't think the EPA or federal govt has done anything about it because they don't know what the heck to do either to fix it.

And unfortunately even if we never burned a drop of oil, we'd still need oil for lubricants, manufacturing (plastics, solvents...), and for farming (fertilizer, pesticides). According to the stats for oil usage, 16% is for these purposes, 84% is burned for fuel (very little for electricity as natural gas and coal can be used for that).

Really quick off topic, ever notice that 97AllMtr chimes in with some attempt at a political/philosophical post.

Back on topic, its gonna take months to get cleaned up but it will take years before any of the wildlife refuges will be ok. Over 600 animals have died and over 200 are covered in oil and struggling to survive.

The EPA and Government had no clue where to start and that is sad and disappointing. BP is supposed to be compensating all the businesses and fishermen affected by this and the government stated that it is going to make sure that they are compensated properly. I can tell you that the tourism in my area is shot because of this.

And fails miserably every time.

Back on topic.

I was watching Leno last night and Chris Rock was on. He said something that made me laugh pretty hard. He said that he wished that George W Bush and Obama could trade presidential terms, because Bush would have made sure that no oil was leaked and lost in the first place, and Obama would have responded to Katrina better.

Easy, everyone is entitled to an opinion; whether you or I, or anyone else for that matter; like(s) it or not is beside the point.

Ours is taking a down turn as well. Several beaches will soon be closed; Some major to our tourism industry. As for your figures on wildlife impact, those numbers aren't even the tip of the iceberg of what we're about to see, sadly.

From what I've heard tell, and this is by no means official; But BP has been offering local fishermen a $3000-$5000 check. STFU money, essentially, as this paltry sum can't begin to cover these men and women's livelihoods. It's a sickening situation, and it's only going to get worse for the foreseeable future.

Fallen - My information was an estimate, by far no where near the amount that has actually died. I live in Pensacola, I am 40 mins from Alabama and bout 4 hours from Lousianna. They have been cleaning the beaches daily along the gulf coast to keep the oil globs from doing more damage. They "speculated" that oil would not reach your area but my area was not lucky. You can wonder what is going to happen. I have seen it first hand and have the oil soaked clothes in my garbage to prove it.

Kiss the wildlife preserves that were in this area good bye cause theres nothing left of them.

Your naivety is amusing to say the least...

And your (and others) arrogant self righteousness is predictable to say the least. Peoples' attitudes are totally amazing to me. How one can criticize others and act so high and mighty, it's so pathetic. That type of thinking is exactly what got us in the mess we are in. I feel that humans are the cancer of this planet (Smith from The Matrix talking there, lol). Anyway, just got done reading about how BP just purchased phrases like "oil spill" on Google and Yahoo search engines. So, the first thing people see when searching about the oil spill is BP's sanitized version of the oil spill. It's just flat out sickening if you ask me.... I am reminded of a quote by George Orwell that someone had in their sig. It was, "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." -George Orwell
How true it is in this world today......

Yes, he did, they all do. But he didn't cause the oil spill. They are all to blame in one way or another. Things have gone on too long without change, same old thinking, same attitude, something has to break eventually.

Perharps you mis-understood what I was saying.

I was replying specificaly to your comment about BP buying search paramters on Google. Obama has done that recently with something. I don't remember exactly what the issue was, but if you searched for a few specific keywords, it would lead you to his website and propaganda, which wasn't the actual truth of the mattter.

They do NOT all do that.

Anyway, sorta back on topic...

I think BP is going to get hit big time for this one. Their stock has already taken a major hit, and they will probably be fined into near oblivion, if not total oblivion. Next time I guess keep up on your safety procedures...

I don't think we need to stop being human. We can all do our part with the environment. Remember, we're all human, not f'in Captain Planet. The one thing that people are guilty of is screwing the owners of BP stations. We get pissed when not only the eco-system is screwed, but small businesses are hurt as well. So we screw small business owners (most American BP stations are privately owned) because a huge corporation had a spill that has never happened before and are coming up with ideas to fix a problem no one else has ever faced. I'm not defending BP, because with the money they make and the degrees they have, you'd think they would be bright enough to fix this already. But, as humans, we seem to love to hate someone or something, as if by us ganging up is going to make us feel better, like we just fixed the problem by complaining. We don't need to like what is going on, I know I'm pissed as hell, but instead of bitching about how they can't fix this problem, maybe we should instead try to figure out ideas on how to solve the problems we now have because of the spill. Like we were taught when we were still crapping in our pants, If you got nothing good to say, don't say anything at all. Translation: Spend more time finding solutions and putting your energy towards positive goals instead of complaining and wasting your energy being negative. Just so everyone knows, this isn't aimed at any one person, it's just my general view on the whole matter...

If you're going to try and quote something to make your point, at least quote it correctly. Agent Smith referred to the human race as a virus, not a cancer.

Shuwa - I live in Milton bout 30 from Navarre. Didn't expect to see another 2gnter so close. Beaches are great.....while they last.

Ronin - lol that's hilarious

Everyone - Yes is something that hasn't happened before but for a company to take this freakin long to do something is ridiculous. 18 years after the Exxon Valdez tanker dumped its load and there is still contamination in the dirt....imagine what we are going to be facing.

If methane gas were really that big of a problem then we'd have to get rid of every cow on the planet.
