#38669, "How do YOU put food on the table?"

Looking at some of these highly modded cars on here, I can't help but wonder what everyone does for work. I'm looking for a new career and maybe I need some suggestions. I work at a Pawn Shop that deals in Car Audio(my department), Jewlery, Tools, Electronics, etc. I'm ready to leave but I don't know where I'm going.
So, Where do you work?

I find the food first, grab ahold of it real careful, then find a table, and set it down.

I paint cars for my step fathers body shop, I hate it. The only good thing about it is, he made me a deal if i work for him.. He would give me a house to live in. So no rent and house payment for me. Helps a lot..

I am a 30 year old College Professor.
I teach Surgical Technology, Surgical Pharmacology, Medical Ethics & Law to College students, Medical Students and Residents.
I still work in surgery every once in a while with specialities in Orthopaedics, Vascular, Trauma, and Robotic assisted surgery.
i also help out hospital surgical teams design and implement new surgical procedures or custom equipment that they may need.

i was recruited right out of surgery and have never taken a formal teaching course in my life, i laugh at my college buddies that sat through "fundementals of teaching" classes in college only to graduate and be a substitute teacher when they were the ones that started out WANTING to be teachers. then theres me that never wanted to be a teacher, and end up being a college professor.

as for recomended jobs . . .
anything in healthcare is fairly solid and mostly future proof, unfortunatly it requires some schooling.
i've been a Firefighter, Medic, and a SCUBA Instuctor while going to school so there are those jobs that take maybe a semester of school and then you can get a solid first job to work up from.

just start at the bottom of somthing you like and the time will go fast regardless of the shift or lowly crap you have to do and you will be making good money in no time

I'm a SysAdmin/POS Technician for a fast food restaurant franchisee. McDonald's to be exact. There is good money to be made doing this work, unfortunately it is retarded hard to get into this position because there are only a handful of companies that do this work and most of them snipe techs from other companies or one company gets a bad rep and the techs reform it as a different company with a different owner.

McDonald's corporate stuff is weird like that.

Machinist, Im currently in a maintenance department of a big aluminum company.
Anything breaks the mechanics take it off and bring it to me to make a new one. I love it.
I get to see a raw chunk of steel, aluminum, whatever material, go from nothing to a finished part all because of me
Been doing it for about 10 years. Hard to find a decent paying job doin it but I found one that im hopefully stayin for awhile.

I work in the audit department of a large accounting firm, auditing both private and public company's. Graduated in 07 and have been working since then. Sometimes its boring, sometimes it sucks because you work long ass hours, but for the most part I enjoy it and it pays exceptionally well for someone who only has a 4 year degree

I'm am a project manager for a materials testing firm. We basically test soil and concrete but we also perform a lot of other testing/inpections. It's fun work. Get to spend some time on job sites and sit at a desk. Graduated with my undergrad in Civil Engineering Dec '08 and moved from Charlotte to Austin to train for a management position within the company.

I'm about to relocate to Pittsburgh to take a job as a department manager so I'm pretty stoked about that. Most people work for years for the kind of opp. I'm about to get and I've done it in a little over a year.

EDIT: I don't spend my money on cars anymore though.

Just about the best advice you will ever get career-wise.

I've done all kinds of things, but I am currently a Community Development Specialist for Toolbox.com. It's kinda like Facebook for IT people. (There's also Toolbox for HR and Finance, now.) I got really lucky and was able to positively spin my time hanging out here on 2GNT as reason to hire me. Dino was even among my references called prior to getting the offer. LOL. Pretty cool, imo.

I could use another grand or so per month to be able to really play with the cars, but I'm happy being back in the nearly stock club for now.

For you youngsters out there, think more about what you like, than about what pays more. If you are doing something with a passion, it seems that somehow, the money comes around (and even if it doesn't, you're still enjoying what you are doing. Not just dragging you ass up to get to that piece of shit job).

Mark has said one of the best things here. I love my job. It has its moments where it blows, but most of the time I love it. Like everything else in life, you can't be happy all the time. IF you can be happy most of the time where you work the money will generally follow.

Also, don't be scared to ask for a pay raise. I was struggling for a while when I started here. After about 18 months I asked for a 40% increase in pay over a 3 year time period. I wanted to know what I needed to know and what I needed to do to get it. I was given a few pointers and some advice and I followed it. 2 years later I have hit my 40% increase in pay with no problems.

I'm just a lowly lab monkey

heh heh, actually my job title is Scientist: Product Research and Development. I do mostly formulation research and development work on new oral dosage formulations, with some analytical chemistry analysis (nothing "routine" anymore, so no more churing out sample testing results over and over again, which isn't really bad work but got boring for me) and a little bit of analytical method development. Previously I did Analytical analysis and method development but was able to get this current job and move into formulation work (mostly) instead, which I find far more interesting and dynamic than analytical, but my current company still finds a valuable need for me to do some analytical work and method development on non routine samples every now and then. I also write a lot of development reports with this job too.

Ok, ok, to put it simply, I figure out how to get a drug to work better by mixing it with all the other stuff that comes in a pill or capsule with that drug. And I also sometimes do testing to figure out how well the new drug+other stuff worked, and then write about what I did and what happened.

I'm a lineman for the electric company here in northeast ohio (see avatar). Personally, I love it. I work outside, and it is rewarding work, at least for me. I like physical work, and being able to look at something, and know you did it. Or to go out after a storm and get the power back on to a whole street... it's pretty cool.

And it pays pretty damn good.

Funny, I thats my weekend job. I've been doing it for about 3 years and honestly it's kinda a stress relief and pays for some of my addictions. I've worked for Best Buy for a total of 8.5 years now, kinda sick when you think about it.

Through the week, however, I'm the GM at a small motorcycle dealership. It's what I love, and honestly I get paid well enough to forget about the people I wanna choke that come in.

Well Hey! Here I am! lol. Up until about three weeks ago, it had been months, or maybe even a couple years or more since I posted. Where have I been... lets see. Well, I recently moved back to Michigan from Seattle, WA. I love that place! Prior to that I was just so busy with work and my son that I didnt really have much time to kick it on 2gnt as I would have liked. How about yourself!? & yes, I still have the 2g. she still sits nice n pretty.

HOO-rah.

You've put in the time, Dave. You've certainly put in the time. Happy for you both.

I guess this would be a good time and place to officially announce that I got fired this week. I'm thinking, if someone tells you someone else isn't doing their job and you discover that said person is not only doing their job, but doing a damn good job of it, the next time the first person comes to you and says that person isn't doing their job, you might double check things. Once two levels of management have signed the walking papers, there's not much discussion.

Karma is a beautiful thing though.

Here's hoping I can be putting food on the table (and a roll cage in the Galant) pretty soon, despite the shatty economy. Press on regardless.

Ah fuck! Sorry to hear guy. Relax a little on unemployment to assess your options and re-evalute your direction. You'll be surprised how this will help you.

Good luck B.

I was completely ignored by Colorado unemployment last year, they found some stupid technicality to not pay me. My employer didn't even contest the claim!

unemployment is a scam.

My girlfriend filed somewhere around 15 weeks ago and just day before yesterday is when they finally started to do their preliminary investigations. We found out her previous employer is blanket denying any unemployment claims against them without reason. The DES agent flat out told us that further investigation is going to tag on another 2-3 weeks minimum.

I am looking for another job, but I did found one thats down the road from work and still close to my house, it Full time 40 hrs. possible weekends off, so I can spend it with my family and 2g.
But, there's a catch its a Groundskeeper for a Cemetary

Thanks to Obama, your tax dollars are now supporting me and my car habit. Maybe this socialist thing ain't so bad. I think I make about as much or more than when I was working for a living

Previously, I was an Information Security Analyst at a local bank.

I worked at a badass bodyshop as a metal fab guy/painter, got my pinkslip, and now I work entirely to hard on thirds at US Foodservice slinging groceries for schools and businesses.

That says enough right there. Close to home, weekends off, 40hrs a week. That also fulfills your obligation with child support. KEYWORD: Getting nowhere. But, are you doing everything possible? speaking your mind? or is it just a dead end? Also, make sure you leave for lateral pay transfer or have a good reason as to why you may be taking a cut if your not making more. Otherwise, the judge will hit you for the same amount of CS if you take a decrease in pay volutarily.

I already know about CS, its the person in charge of Support order not the judge. My case worker is cool, she explained everything to me of how it works and what to do..

No, I didn't take a pay cut I got a raised when I was transferred to new location Still the same company. The place I'm at cut my hours down due to the stores sales but they other people I with more hours. I've been there longer than them and they kiss boss's butt to get more hours but they are lazy, they don't work instead they B.s more and wait til the last minute to work. My shift does the clean up.

I'm keeping this job since I'm still supporting my daughter either way.

I was asking should take this job, what caught my attention was 40 hrs and fulltime. The job mostly outdoors mowing around cemetary plots etc.. I don't mind it since I same stuff around the house and I used to work for a Lawn Care company laying Fert. in the past.

One thing I think this job would be weird is because there's been deaths in my family, lost of my father during a hunting accident and one of my brother's suicide. I was person who found him, it was scary shit.

I till tomorrow afternoon to apply for this job but I'm very considering taking.

I just hope with both jobs I could take the rent of this house from my relative. 3 bd full basement, big dining room living room with big yard long drive with two car garage at 500 a month is bargin. It just needs some work though but isn't a prob, because I how to most of the repairs.. I would put privacy fence around it or fenced in, its suited for it.
