#9045, "loud clunking noise from right rear"

tokico illumina's + eibach pro's... i started to hear a loud clunking noise from my right rear whenever i hit a bump. none of the other do it, and it just started a few days ago. my father and i took it out, and nothing seems to be wrong. any ideas?

I had the same problem, also check your camber, and a piece of rubber hose will help.

Be sure the nut on top of the strut is nice and tight too. If its loose, it can cause this noise too..

ok, i don't think it's the nut... it's on there tight. can't be the camber cuz i had just gotten an alignment done correcting the camber. any other ideas, other than the first?

check my previous posts and replies about this annoying clunk.

my clunk happens when the end of the bottom spring hits the bottom metal perch that should hold the spring in place. if you hear it on the right now.. sooner or later you will get it on the left as well.

did you always hear it (right after dropping your car), or did it just start one day? mine just started one day; actually, i think it started after i had it aligned, which was about a month after i dropped it.

mine just started happening one day.. before i was even lowered. i think it had to do with some spirited driving i had been doing not long before where i would allow my back end to slide sideways.. here is my thought or theory on it.

damn.....detailed info....I love it...bwahahahaaa....

i have another theory, the rubber part is not present between the bolt and the arm...so it doesn't move sideways, it moves up and down.....

i had a clunking soundin the rear of the car too but it was only when i was idling and starting off. once i was moving, it stopped. turned out that the muffler pipe was tapping against a part of the car, when it goes over the rear end. when i redid my exhaust, we ran it differently and stopped the problem

I have the same problem, talked with a car-head about it and he said the rubber piece has probably deteriorated and easily fixed.

somebody here in the board suggested i get new KYB Strut Boots and KYB Strut & Shock Mounts to see if that would fix it. i haven't gotten around to getting them from tire rack.

http://www.tirerack.com/suspension/Susptabl.jsp?autoMake=Mitsubishi&autoModel=Eclipse+GS&autoYear=1998

maybe somebody can try it and see if it actually fixes this annoying clunk.

this could only be like 2 or three things. You need to eliminate parts first. Take the shock ou make sure it travels up and down, and that the bushing is good. Then look at the upper control arm bushing I think jason is right we changed all his broke garbage over to the poly stuff a couple of months back. This upper bushing goes out on alot of cars. late mike

i called eibach (949-752-6700) and asked them about the annoying clunk in my rears.

the tech said i should check a couple of things...

1) you should be able to read the letters on the spring LEFT to RIGHT. this assures that the spring is installed correctly.

2)that the bumpstops are in good shape

3) that there is a quarter of an inch gap between the bottom end of the spring and the perch ( is this true?????, i was under the assumption that the spring should be tight and snug on the perch because the noise is THE result of the spring bouncing on the perch)

what do you all think? i am going to check stuff when i get off work today.

i also called tire rack because i was going to get the kyb strut mount boots and bumpers.. but the guy in tire rack said that he is sure it will not fix my clunk problem.

if you want to call kyb, this is there # 800-592-2677

Did Eibach say it's a safety issue or is it just annoyance?

i didn't ask... they didn't say. i figure they would have said something if it was a safety issue.
