#8143, "Is it normal for new pads to touch the rotor surface when not braking?"

I just installed new Metal Master pads with Powerslot rotors with Ian's help (thanks Ian). I just noticed that the pad rests on the rotor when the car is just sitting there (no braking). Is that normal? I see the rear brake pads have space in between the pad surface and the rotor. But the fronts I just replaced have the pad surface resting completely on the rotor. I can't see any movement when someone else hits the brake pedal with the car on, since the pad appears to already be resting on the rotor. Is that ok?

um, did you bleed the breaks? sounds like thats the problem... if you didnt its not that hard to do you have to take off that little black rubber thing on the top of the cailper off and then get a wrench and open that up(where the black thing covered up) then get a wrench or something i forget the name and squeez the piston inside the break and break fluid will start to come out that hole... then just keep trying intill the break pads have enough room then close the little things on where the fluid came and put some more break fluid in DOT-3 or DOT-4 i think it says on the white cap

Yes, that's normal. All brakes that I have seen will "slightly" rest against the disc. The calliper doesn't actually retract them away. Same with drums.

Yeah it's fine, once you start driving they get pushed away a bit.

Ya I bled the brakes and put in new brake fluid. The level is fine too. I guess it's normal, except are my rears messed up then? I never changed them, and there is about a 1/4" space between the brake pad and the rotor when the car is just parked. The pads look pretty thin, but they haven't squeaked or anything, and I have about 52k miles on the rears.

I would make sure that when you press on the brakes that the poads come in contact with the rotor, if so, no problem. If not then you may have a problem with the caliper.
