#7878, "Drop Springs/Ingals Camber kit install"

Hello guys. I've been hanging out a few weeks and finally got a hopeful worthy question to ask.

I'm dropping my 99RS with Drop springs and have the Ingles camber kit to flatten the tires back to the road. My question is how long will this process take? I have all the air tools and everything required to do the job including a castor/camber gauge. Also I plan on doing the install Wednesday night and driving to down to Atlanta Ga on Friday. I was hoping to get the car aligned up before making the trip but have read else where itโ€™s best to let the springs settle before doing this. I am pretty sure I can get the wheels pretty close to being right but I am not a pro at this and would hate to ruin my new tires. Thanks for taking the time to read and if you answer thanks again.

Thanks,
Allen

Well this is ironic to me since i just dropped my car and i'm haveing the same camber probs. I got the H&R sport springs. It lowered my car about 2" in front, and 1.5" in rear. The only camber kit that will work that i have found is indeed the Ingalls kit. I got an Eibach kit that replaces the front upper control arm bushings, but isn't enough to bring back into spec. Now i have to get the ingalls. It is VERY EASY to install the ingalls kit. DON'T PAY to have installed! With air tools, takes about 30 minutes a side, no joke. I had to take out the upper control arm "leg" that contains the bushing, and its very simple, you would need to do the same with the ingalls kit. Here is how you do it. You don't NEED to take off the front wheel to do it, but it will give you some more room if you do. Raise the front of the car up off the wheels. Look up at the top of the inside fender well, and you will see the upper control arm, with a circular cylinder with a "leg" on it, going up into the engine bay, one on each side of the contol arm. I believe it is a 17mm bolt that are right in front of the strut tower, right behind the battery. If you are looking at from the drivers side, there is one on your left, and one on your right. These are the bolts that hold in that "leg" and the control arm bushing. Loosen both of these bolts and remove them. Now wiggle the control arm up and down to get those legs out of the fender well, and now you should be able to swing the whole tire/wheel brake disc assmebley downward, and you should be able to swing the whole control arm around and out facing you. Now you should be able to see both of the legs, again, with one on your left, and one on your right. Now take a 14mm box wrench, and a 14mm socket wrench and loosen the through-bolt that holds on the leg to the control arm. With this bolt out, you should be able to fully remove that leg/bushing. The ingalls kit will TOTALLY replace this whole piece. Install the new ingalls "leg"/bushing just like the old stock one, put in the through bolt, and tighten. Do the same for the other side. Now swing back the whole control arm assembly, and work the two "legs" back up into the fender well, and push up hard, and put back on the nuts from atop the engine bay on top of the strut tower. Now you will have to tighten the kit's slide bolt that gives the adjustment before you let the car back down. Thats it. Done. Do the other side. The rear kit is just as easy. By looking at it, i'm sure you can figure it out. It just pushes the whole control arms away from the fender well, putting back some more positive camber. After you are done, lower the car, and find a perfectly flat piece of thin wood or metal long enough to cover the whole tire from top to bottom. Take a level and put it up against the wood. You are trying to see how much off the level is from the top of the tire, to the bottom of the tire. For a good starting point, or a very close zero'd out camber, try and get the bubble on the level in the center of the level.Since you have some alignment gauges, you can use them instead too.If its off, loosen the kits slide adjustment bolt, and move the wheel assembly in or out depending on your camber measurements. This should be a very good base setting until you can get it aligned at a shop. Let new springs settle for at least several days to a week. My springs did settle at lest another half inch just after a day and a half after install. I have been measureing since, and have not gotten any more settle after that intital day and a half, just for the record. I hope all this makes sense, but when you see the factory legs i'm talking about, and you look at the ingalls front kit, you will see right away that the kit just replaces the legs, and look VERY similar in how they look. Good luck, its really fairly easy. I took apart my fronts without even taking off the wheel, and infact, almost helped some when i had to tilt the wheel out to twist the control arm assembly outward when taking off the factory legs. any other q's let me know. I infact just did this today!

Go here for the spring/strut install http://www.houstonhardware.com/~cbehnken/struts.html

This part took about 4 hours to do, including the rear camber mod. Rear are very easy to do, fronts a little harder. I just now re-read your post and didn't realize you havent dropped the car yet. I'd say for all springs and both front and rear camber kits, about 5-6 hours with air tools, maybe less depending on rusted bolts, ect..Hope this helps. Just take your time, and it will be a fairly easy task..

Thanks for the info. I will be sure to take my digital camera with me during the install to snap some photos of the operation. My camber kit is supposed to be here Wen but I am hoping it will be here a day early so I get this swap done and head down to Atlanta on Friday morning. Any of you guys from the Snellville area? Nopi is having a show Saturday and I plan on checking it out.

Thanks,
Allen
