My friend gave me some 18 inchers because he was selling his prelude. One of them blew up on me, and now i have all four wrapped in Kumho ECSTA Supras 225/45.
They seem pretty good (i have heard otherwise...) but hey, free rims? I can't complain too much.
But I can complain about the damn wheel hop. I launched fine before with stock rims at about 4000 rpms... but now with these new rims and tires, i feel like the car is having a seizure when i try to launch at the same rev. With lower revs I feel like i'm not getting a good launch.. and with higher revs the wheels just peel out...
I dunno what's causing it, first I thought i had too much stuff in my trunk.. but when i took it out, i still have alot of wheel hop.
Are the wheels too heavy? Is there any way i can fix it by upgrading my suspension? I kinda want to keep the rims since they were free.. and they look beast on my car. So any help with products lists or tuning that you guys can think of would help out.
What's causing the wheel hop is the stiff, low sidewalls on your new tires. The old setup had more give, and gave you more grip. The new tires are not gripping as consistantly and thus are wheel hopping (gripping, then slipping, then gripping causing hop)
Motor mount inserts will solve that problem. Also, if you are wheel hopping you are launching too hard. Low profile, wide tread, and stiff tires are not real good for straight line drag racing or for launching (they are harder to launch with and they slow the car down, too much rotational inertia for lower hp/torque cars like ours)
Motor mount inserts will help too. I was wheelhoppin' like I was had cheap hydraulics until I put these in. The inserts go into the front and rear motor mounts, which are on the crossmember. The inserts cost a whopping 20 bux, and took a bit more then an hour to install. -=B-=

yeah the inserts let more torque get to the ground. essentially you need more power not more suspension. btw get new tires ecstas are soo cheap get pilots like todd has
I ordered mine direct from energy suspension. It was 17 bucks and 8 bucks for shipping. You might find it elsewhere for cheaper. (they had the lowest price for the item, but they conned me with shipping!)
