#30009, "Loud knock when braking hard"

I have been hearing this for the past few days now. Everytime I get on the brakes hard, right before it comes to a complete stop I hear a loud knock/pop in the front somewhere. I don't feel it in the brake pedal and I've put the car in nuetral and it will still do it. And it only does it right before it stops, no other time. Anybody got a clue on what this could be?

Maybe something in your torque converter? That's a weird one. Obviously if it's in nuetral it's not the tranny. And it can't be the braking system or axels b/c it would do it consisently, not just when braking hard. Hope you figure it out. How many miles on your car?

I get that too, it's worse if I hit a pothole or railroad track while braking. I have no idea where it's coming from, but I suspect a ball joint somewhere.

Wasn't there a recall on those?

Yeah, it's great, they replace it with the same exact part number, except this time they use GREASE. emoji

I've done the lower ball joint recall, that wasn't it. Might want to look at your rear motor mount, and sway bar bushings & links.

Lots of people have this problem-

I had this same problem and I initially thought it was my front caliper on the pass side. My girls father thought it was something in the suspension, but I just bled the brakes and it stopped doing it and I haven't had the problem since. It was just as you described....It's worth a shot. Post back with results!

Could be the exhaust hitting/shifting when braking. My pacesetter catback did it constantly while braking or backing, but did not make any noise when I got under it and shook it. I now have a custom mandrel 3 inch from the downpipe back and poly hangers. I have not heard that popping again. The poly hangers made a huge difference in how much the exhaust moved. I didn't need the flex from rubber hangers anymore, due to solid front motor mount/prothane poly side mounts and prothane poly rear inserts and 3 inch flex section in the downpipe.

I also thought a balljoint was going out, but could not find any problems when it hung on the rack.

You might want to check the exhaust pipe after it makes the 90 degree bend to the left, just prior to 90 degree bend back to the rear. There is a section that goes from left to right, and it wants to hit a part of the frame brace. My exhaust had this spot worn away, but I could not get it to hit from me pushing against it. If this is hitting. put a hanger on and pull the exhaust to the rear, so it cannot go forward under hard braking.

Just another idea.

The same thing happens on the corvette... Just brakes near fine, or maybe you can't actually hear it until you are at a slower speed. It sounds normal then thump thump thump... I feel ya there... Still not sure exactly what is causing the noise but I also haven't had time to take stuff apart and look at it

A repeating knock while braking would be the pads slapping due to the rotors not being smooth, or the abuntment clips being worn. A single knock is probably a bad ball joint like they said. I've also heard this with loose struts (not likely your case).

Yeah I'm just dealing with it right now until I put the adj. coils in, then I'll use the info gathered here, inspect everything closely and hopefully find out what's causing this. Probably going to do it this weekend, been pretty lazy lately plus I did the whole new door handle thing this weekend so I didn't feel like doing much else. I'll post back what I find out.

BRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE-*POP* WTF!?
