i am going to replace a rotor today since its bad, but auto zone didnt have that tool to compress the pads in when im done, am i going to need it? i was also gonna paint the calipers while im doing this too, so i will have to take both calipers off

In terms of needing a spring compressor, it is pretty much MANDATORY. A spring can be dangerous if not removed in the proper fashion.

Removing your calipers to paint your calipers will yield much cleaner results if you plan to use the rattlecan. Yet if you do not think you can do this...just use an epoxy type paint for the calipers and just be careful.

To push the piston back into place after doing brake work you just need a large "C clamp" available at any hardware store

Just remember if you disconnect the brake lines you need to bleed the brakes multiple times when you hook it all back up.
Removing the caliper will yield a much better looking caliper paint job, but it can be done just hanging the caliper and masking off the car around that area, cleaning and painting.

Just dont let the caliper hang there from the brake lines, Use wire or a coat hanger to suspend it.

What did you guys use to clean the calipers? Brake cleaner, Soapy water, specialized bacterial Enzyme treatment? I can never seem to get those crevices completely clean.

What I did was Use those kits that are sold at pepboys or autozone for 20 bucks.

I used that cleaner, Then hit it with brake cleaner, then with degreaser . Then finally I hit it with a wire brush like mentioned above. If you use the bruch not only will it take away all the grime that the cleaners didnt, but it will sort of sand it. In the end this leaves a smoother surface and yet is rough enough that the paint sticks to it nicely.

Also, like he said, hit it with really light coats at first, The enamel is so thick that it will look like shit the first 3-4 coats due to the texture of the caliper parts. Just be patient, dont plan on driving you car for the day and night and give multiple coats.

I had the luxury of taking the front ones out for the GSX conversion, but did the rears on the car. By far the fronts look way better till this day.

Oh just a tip, If you take off the calipers, drain em or Cap em. That brake fluid will eat right through your freshly painted calipers finish lol.

I know the folly of brake fluid on paint I'd probably be better getting a spare set of calipers and painting those then, huh? Might as well do that and then rebuild them, I could let them cure for weeks if I wanted to

the $20 kit at napa/autozone works great pretty thick paint 3 coats but they look great
