#29188, "little help with spring compressor"

well doing my suspension I finally got all the bolts off (pain in the ass, no air tools emoji ) and got to the part where I had to use the spring compressor to compress the stock spring... well the thing autozone rented me looks like... hell i don't even know the correct way to use it, its just a rod with a square nut with two hooks coming out either side of varying length, and an entirely seperate piece that looks like a big claw.

Not to mention turning that square thing around the threaded rod took all the forc I can muster just to turn it in the first place.... What the hell should I do. Somebody give me a tip on using this p.o.s.

I don't understand what your problem is. If you don't understand how to use it than look at the pic below that I found in google. That is the same compressor that I got form autozone when I was doing my strut

Be very careful undoing the nut on top of the strut, spray with wd 40 first and only after slowly unscrew it like it says in all the DIY. If you rush u will break the little thingy on top and u will have nothing to grab onto, If that happens u will have to use wisegips or impact gun. U can buy and return real nice electric gun from sears.

P.S. If you are careful u don't need to use spring compressor for the rear shock when u take em out the spring is almost fully unloaded, U will need it for the front!

I know spark plugs are not a mod but the car runs so smooth now.

yeah I've seen that pic before, and that is very far from the spring compressor that autozone gave me here. let me see if i can find a picture of it.

ok, the bottom half looks like thid : Only one set of those hook thingies, not two. The other part looks like.. fuck it i can't even find a picture of one that resembles it, figures my fuckin autozone gives me some ancient piece of shit.

the other piece looked like a big ass steel claw, two prongs. The rod had three thick washers on it, and i'm assuming you simply used the claw to compress the spring between it and the swinging hook.

fuck it i'll just go to a different autozone or sumthin and get one that actually was made in this decade. i have the worst luck with cars I swear to god.

just another queston, for when and if i get the right compressor, do i actually have to compress the spring at all with it, or just tighten it up so that when I remove the mounting bracket at the top the spring doesn't uncompress any further?

You got the wrong tool!

http://autozone.com/in_our_stores/loan_a_tool/steering_suspension/steering_suspension.htm

Check it out u got coil spring compressor u need strut spring compressor.

FYI

The one that u got when u have a regular spring in your car thats when u use it. You put it in perpendicular through the coil. Attach the hooks to individual coils and than start turning as the two sides travel outward they will compress the spring cuz it is hooked to the coils.

Kinda works like a jack that comes with our cars but in another direction.

For rear struts just tighten it a little cuz when the car off the ground the spring is fully relaxed! You can do the rear without any compressor at all! But to be on a safe side put it in there and tighten a little

For the front you will have to compress alot!

ghetto way to change your springs without any special tools :

remove wheel, put another jack under the supsension arm and jack it up, remove strut nut on top of suspension, slowly lower the jack that you put under the suspension lower arm. this way it doesn't POP out on your face, and you saved yourself a trip to autozone indeed...

yeah it's ghetto but it works, and it's almost faster than using a compressor...

Quit your job
Sell your car
Get on a plane
Surf and party
Fall in love
Never come back...
