The inner tie rod is the skinny one that goes into the boot on the steering rack, the outer is the one at the end that looks like it has a little ball joint on the end of it, the outer tie also connects into the knuckle which holds the bearing/brake assembly
So the inner tie rod, is just simply the threaded rod, and the outer is the ball joint that screws on the end of it? Or is there another ball joint looking one on the inside of that boot?
The outer tie rod END is the balljoint looking thing which you can see right behind the wheel.
The inner tie rod END is where the tie rod connects to the steering rack. It's in there, you have to look far in, but follow the tie rod towards the center of the car. you'll see it.

So heres what ended up happening...Found out both the inner and outer tie rods were shot : Replaced. So I did the brakes while I was at it and had everything apart.....found out both the inner and outer tie rods were shot on the drivers side as well. And all of that to find out that my driveaxle on the passanger side is fucked as well.
In conclusion, inner and outer tie rods on both sides, passanger side driveaxle,brembo rotors, pads.....I'll tr to post some pics of my peice after I'm done with everything, cuz the rotors and driveaxle won't be here till monday. :parked car for the weekend; not happy:
yea, post pics. I just had an alignment an evidentally my inner tie rod is loose. I haven't really ever messed with suspension (except springs/struts) so I want to find out more about it.
The tie rods are probably one of the easiest things to mess with on our car. Just mae sure that you either measure the length of the whole thing or mark it somehow to get it close to where it was. You should always get an alignment though just to make sure you got it right. Tire wear will be an issue otherwise.
PS I never got to intall the inner tie rod cuz the dumb ass at the shop misdiagnosed it... It was an outer that was started to get loose. And that one I got form dealer for 2 reasons, 1 quality 2 no lubrication needed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 98 Stock Talon ESi Mods: New spark Plugs NGK, Fresh ATF, K&N, AGX, UDP and ZipTies tieing the strut towers (according to BlackMagic increases my torsional rigidity) I know spark plugs are not a mod but the car runs so smooth now.
I got mine from Advance Auto in VA. Both are TRW parts and you do have to lube the outer. Cost about $45 for the pair (drivers side) I find that a couple of the other brands are too long on the outer (speaking of the threaded portion of the ball joint itself) that will cause failure because it won't stay tight in the socket of the knuckle.
