hey I just a new set or powerslot and since im up at school I dont use the car all the time and after it rains the rotors rust (I know this is normal) the only thing is normally as soon as you drive it the rust is gone but for some reason the rust is only wearing off some spots and the rotors still have rust lines on the surface where the pads touch..why do you think this is happening???

I don't have an answer but I thought the Cadmium plating was supposed to prevent rust, or is that just to "protect it" emoji

well yea the rest of the rotor is not rusted..im just talkin about the surface where the pad hits

The rotor itself isn't actually "rusting" exactly. There is some surface oxidation, but the rotor should be fine. Nothing exactly prevents rust, as any metal will oxidize. Flaws in coatings or cracks can increase the rate at which this happens.

When you say the rotors only have rust lines where the pads touch, do you mean at the edge of the pads, or over the entire surface? Also, do you mean JUST one spot on the rotor from where the pads were when you parked the car, or lines around the entire rotor.

There may be some some scratches and ridges created from the contact point of the pads with the rotor in either case from my first question. For the second, if it is just one spot, this is probably due to the mositure held between the pad and rotor.

Hard to say exactly, as long as it isn't penetrating into the actual rotor and stays just on the surface, I personally don't think it should be a problem. Just my 2 cents though, maybe someone else has a better idea.

yes its basically around the entire surface of the rotor...its jsut weird cuz with my old rotors when they rusted they were clean right after a nice drive...idk

Intesting... It may be due to some grooves worn in the rotor, and/or grooves in the pade. I have Powerslots on my car, and since in snowed/rained/froze everything here in Worcester today, my rotors are nice and wet. I'll check tomorrow and see if I notice anything similar, though I haven't as of yet. I also drive it on a regular basis (at least every other day)

Also, what pads are you running with the rotors and what break in procedure did you use with them?

I dont think there are any grooves worn in the rotor, i imagine it it possible that the pads have grooves not sure tho. to break in the rotors i did what they told me, i heat cycled them and such...its just really weird

I have powerslots on my talon which has been sitting in the crappy pa weather for the last 3 monthes and they show no signs of rust other than on the edges where there is no coating.

I get the same thing, but I don't think anything of it, it does not affect my stopping ability.

Rust on the surface that the pad is in contact with is normal because whatever coating may have been on the rotor when you purchased it is gone. What you see is just rapid oxidation, which is normal.

Drive around a bit, do hard breaking so that the brakes are nice and hot... wash the car and wheels... your rotors will show rust on them by the time the car is dry, normal.

While it is true that the coating on the rotor is gone, if they were decent pads for the rotors and run through the proper break in procedure, they should have deposited some material that will fuse with the surface under the heat during break in.

In the case of my Hawk HPS pads you would notice a bluish tint or hue from the matrial deposits now in the metal.

In the end though, as was said, this should in no way effect your stopping power.
