When I drive over bumps or rough road I hear hissing kinda noise coming form the rear right side every bump. The same noise can be heard from the left side but much more rarely. I have heard this noise on some other much newer cars when they go over a bump or road imperfection but mine is a 98 with 82K miles. Does it mean that the shocks got to go now?

if you havent changed the shocks ever with 82K miles your shocks front and rear could probably be replaced

I am not planning on lowering the car. I know that koni are good, do they make them for stock height? And I am really considering KYB since I they are much cheaper and have a very good quality vs price ratio.

Let's get back to my question does the hissing sound mean to change them? The car handles well better than my old eclipse and better than 04 sonata my mother has. No oil can be seen on the shock absorber just the hissing

Push on the back of car really hard a few times let it go.. If it continues to rebound after you let go they are going or blown. Also, I will vouch for KYB's I have AGX adjustables and they are fun to play with.. All the different settings and roads you can play on are fun. Anyway, any shock will do for replacement using stock springs. Good luck with it.

I don't think this test works well for our cars. In my old eclipse with original shocks and 150K miles rocking the car and than letting it go did not show any extra bounce it would stop right there. This one also checks out good. I think this is bc our cars are too stiffly sprung this method doesn't work for me. Thanks any way for info

btw to adjust kyb do you have to go under the car or can you do it from inside?

With all adjustable shocks you have to do it from outside of the car, the only shocks that you can adjust the dampening from inside the car is the Tein setup which you can buy a control module called an EDFC I believe. Anyway.. Adjustables are awesome deffintley get a set
