#26449, "New pads/calipers---stuck?"

Ok i have searched and this isn't typical before someone jumps on me...

I just did the GSX conversion yesterday/today with used calipers and new powerslot rotors/metalmasters pads, and SS brake lines. I flushed the whole system with motul till it looked like budweiser coming out, and legitimately bled the brakes with the wheels off both with a speed bleeder and the old school style. Brakes feel great.

BUT

I noticed a little bit of paint from the calipers on the right rotor, and now that rotor smokes alot. I also noticed the car's unwillingness to roll in neutral where it would've freely rolled before. I think that caliper isn't releasing all the way.

before I put it on I checked them over and replaced things like bleeders that looked worn, and cleaned (with mineral spirits) and regreased the caliper bolts. All dust boots looked great and the pistons moved freely. Any ideas? Should I let them break in a bit longer or am I torching my new rotor?

i know that different year gsx comes with different width of rotors. How do we find out which is which? I've no idea. but It might be the case in your senario.

Good Luck

There is variation in the rears only. What happens if you compress the piston back into the caliper, and step on the brake? Can you compress the piston back into the caliper?

It sounds like a problem with one of the slider pins...

that's what i'm thinking---although this morning the car rolled backwards no problem. I'm going to give the brakes a little more time and see what happens--I may have just been rubbing a minute part of the painted caliper on the rotor.

Did you clean the hell out of the pads and rotors when you were done? Grease gets very sticky when on a rotor or pad + heat. Any type of auto oil/grease will make your calipers tend to lock wheels up. Slides is most common but make sure you have everything cleaned good.

This is not correct from my own personal experience. I found out there are 2 different front rotor thicknesses. One that is too large is slightly over 1" thick, and will cause your pads to drag on your rotors. I've been there, done that with the GSX conversion. Take your rotors off and measure the thickness. It should be the same thickness as your STOCK rotors, and will prob have a ".890" measurement on the back somewhere. It confused the hell out of me at first, but I checked all different manufactures, and they all seem to carry 2 different rotors. The strange thing is though, is that there is only 1 part# for the calipers..I never fully understood it, but I do know there are 2 diff sized rotors. Now if you have the proper rotors, then you have a caliper/hydrolic issue somewhere. You should always use the caliper slider pin greese also on the pins..

Did you put the right slider bolt in the right hole? One has a plastic spacer, the top one IIRC.
