Jack one or both sides. Grab the wheel at 9 and 3. Shake. If you feel play you need a tie rod. Have someone else shake while you grasp the outer tie rod end and the steeriing knuckle. If you feel play there then you know that you need to replace that one at least. Do it again with the inner end and if you feel play there... A lot of times you will be able to see the play and know which one is jacked up. Any more questions drop me a line. More than happy to help!

what year is your car? I believe in the "shotgun" method of repairs. what do I mean by this? well, if one tie rod end is going bad, the others most likely aren't very far behind that one, I'd just change them all and get one alignment and be done. It really sucks when a tie rod end goes out when your driving down the road, trust me I know.

that's not too bad of a price if it includes 4wheel alignment, I suppose. I "rented" the inner tie rod end tool from pep boys. there are two kinds of inner tie rod end tools, one is just like an extrension with a socket on the end, which is useless. the one we need is like a big hollow pipe with a speciall crows foot attachment. it''s really not that hard if you've turned a wrench before in your life. see this post, describes everything you need to know....
