Lately (since it got cold), the brake light has about a 75% chance of coming on when I start the car and staying on. The parking brake is not up. What else does the brake light mean? Does it also indicate a problem with the braking system of some form? I went to check the fluid level, but I'm not sure how to open it - is it a twist or a cap? I didn't want to pull on it the wrong way and bust it.

but low fluid usually means your pads/shoes are gonna need to be replaced soon. that's the whole purpose behind the light. when your pads are new you max out the reservoir. as they wear down more fluid is needed to push the pistons/cylinder out farther. this causes the level in the reservoir to drop and makes the light in your dash come on. when this happens you should probably check/replace your pads or shoes.
topping off the fluid will make the light go away but it defeats the purpose. if your pads and shoes have plenty of wear left you might have a leak somewhere.

And it could also be the simple... A switch out of adjustment or sticking... If fluid level is low look for wetness around the brakes, lines etc, indicating a leak. Then check for wear on shoes/pads. If all that is good. I would opt for one of the switchs.

MadHatter, I tried your little go backward thing, shut car off and it didn't work. I topped up the fluid in the resivior (was like 1/4" low) NOTHING. WTF?
I hate it.
