#25802, "How to tighten strut rod nut w/o spinning rod. (Broke Vice Grip Part)"

So Im tryin to tighten the top nut that holds the mount and spring and everything down, I gripped the rod with some vice grips at the very top that was flat on the sides to prevent it from turning.

While I was tightening the nut, the top flat part of the rod broke off. I only tightened it half way down. The whole nut has thread to grab onto, but there is a slight gap between the nut and the washer and when i hit a bump there is a slight metal noise between to two when they hit. Im prolly going to put some rubber washers between the two if I cant figure out how to fully tighten the nut without spinning the rod.

So any ideas?

An air rachet is your best friend, just use some common sense and don't strip the threads by overtightening it.

friends with any shops? just swing by and tell them what size the nut is so they don't have to go searchin for it and see if they can't throw an impact gun or air wrench on it really quick.

I don't know why half the suspension companies out there even make it so you can use a hand wrench when all it does is end up stripping the threads. Like they said an impact is your best friend in this situation.

Thanks guy imma try tomorrow, I found the impact is best for tightening the UDP back on takes but 10 mins vs the 1.5 hr to manually put that thing back on manually.

In the future you might want to consider using a 6 mm open end wrench instead of vice grips. It makes it a little harder to break that nub off, since it's not clamped onto it.

open end wrench will work, but for suer an impact. it will spin the nut faster then the rod can turn. works great emoji
