Friday I dropped my car of to be lowered, a few hours later they called me and said that my rear passenger side upper strut mount had rotted out, so I went back to the shop and sure enough it was totally rotten, the left one was in perfect shape, is that weird or what, since they are inside the rear of the car and covered with a rubber cap, has anyone else had this happen, it sux now I have to wait untill this Friday to get it lowered UGH!

I seem to remember reading about a recall that said sometihng about water leakage. Could that be what caused the rotting away? If so that replacement should be free if it falls under the recall. What ya driving and I will look into the recall a little further.

mine are bad too, I didn't know it untill about two weeks ago when the rear drivers side upper mount actually broke in half, so I checked the passenger side and that one is looking like it's about to shear apart too . I found replacement mounts and I grabed all the rubber pads at the junk yard from a '95galant for like $5 for each side. they were still in pretty good shape, had a little rust on them but I cleaned them up and smeared rust inhibitor all over them, should be good for a while now.

my upper strut mount didn't give any kind of warning, it just broke and then got REAL noisy. This is something everyone should check on their cars, I'd be willing to bet that there are many rotten mounts out on the road.

The guy at the parts store quoted me $25 fro a new mount, but I went to the junkyard and got a good one from a '95 galant, it was like five bucks and I got all the spring pads and bushings along with it. I am from OH originally too, my car spent two years on the salty winter roads in Cleveland, and I think that is what did it. something I am considering trying, is making a gasket out of paper or something to go between the mount and the car itself to keep moisture out, I've seen that done on BMW's, it's probably a good idea.

any pics? I have a 95 also with 170k on it and my suspension has never been touched since it left the factory except for the ball joint recall and alignments.
my car was born in illinois and has stayed in illinois except for 2 trips up to NY and a small excursion into Wisconsin for cheese (my cousin wanted to eat cheese in wisconsin)
