#22750, "Suspension problems? GET YOU ASS IN HERE"

So when I slow down I here a popping noise.
I brake, and it goes away. This is from the driver side.
I checked all the bolts ect and everything seams to be ok. I have had a loose wheel before, and it sounds the same.
Again this is only under deceleration. If I brake lightly it will happen, or if I brake hard it stops????
Nothing to do with when I turn.

#2: Anyone know the size for the control arm nut? I'm not to savy with suspension. I THINK the control arm is what turns the wheel. Thats the nut i need emoji

Thanks everyone!

The axle nut? I think it's 21mm.

It sounds like you have a bad ball joint or sway bar endlink.

the steering linkages are held on by a ball joint,a castle nut and a cotter pin. nick, might be a leaky cv boost or something, check under the car for any fluid on or around the rubber boots on the axles. also, you put in the right amount of tranny fluid right? you might just need to lube up the suspension peices with a grease gun, check around the dush sheilds on the brakes, they might be rubbing or something.

You mean the tie rod end?

You have two of them you know. Why don't you go check the other side and see what size it is?

Lol a grease gun? You need grease fittings to be able to grease something bro =] DSMs have sealed chasis, too. Unless you have had service and replaced your outer tie rods or anything there is nothing to grease.

um...yea, grease gun. my tie rod was cleaned off and when i turned the wheel it made an odd squeeking, i pulled off the castle nut, used a grease gun to give it some lube, put it back in, torqued the castle nut and put in the cotter pin, no more squeaks. all i was saying.

I understand what you are saying, but if a chasis part has no grease fitting, then it is sealed with Teflon or some other perma-lube. If it creaks or makes noises then the boot has a crack somewhere and has become contaminated and needs to be replaced. Greasing it will work temporarily but will not permanently solve the problem.

I don't think so! Our lugs are I think 22mm and the axle nut is alot bigger than that. I actually used a 1 1/4" socket becuase I didn't have a metric big enough. I am guessing a 31mm or 32mm.

The inner/outer tie rod combination that are mounted to the rack & pinion is what turns the wheel/tire. Jack the driver corner up and grab the tire @ 3 and 9 o'clock and shake. If there is any play you need tie rod(s). Then grab at 12 and 6 o'clock and shake. If there is any play you have bad ball joint(s). Lower and repeat for the passenger front. This is also a good way to check your ball joints perodically if you have not had the recall inspection yet.

Actually to check the ball joints accuratly you need to relieve the spring tension on the ball joints....

jack up your car, place jack stands underneith, place your jack under the ball joint and jack it up just an inch. if the lower arm moves and the knuckle does not then you have problems, otherwise grap the wheel top and bottom and wiggle in and out, have a friend watch the ball joint because you may not feel the play.

Terry

there is a recall on the ball joints. do you know if you've ever had them done? if not then call teh dealer with your vin and they will tell you if it hasn't. if it has its still lifetime warrantied and they will fix the ball joints. good luck
