SO what is the difference (if any) between the handling performance for 17" and 18" wheels? Also, what depth 18s will actually fit our cars with what tires?

With an 18 inch rim i bet noise is higher...more rotational mass can make the handling worse and also accelaration....plus a 17 inch rim is more of a racing size....if your going with something that is more of a show thing and less perfomance minded 18 is your way....I prefer a nice 17inch rim....anything bigger in my opinion is over doing it

this is gonna sound really st00pid n whatnot...but i see most of the big drift cars in japan rockin 18's...they are also decent hp cars that are bred for that, but why would they rock them if they weren't offering some sort of benefit??

Maybe because there finding for what they are wanting to do that a tire with that size helps them out the most...i dunno...sometimes you just cant explain it....but I think for this car....17 is the best for performance since it is much smaller then most of those cars that are drifting

i wouldn't trade my 18s for much. they look great on the car, rides fine and like the width of the tire. unless rims are light weight they aren't goin to affect performance much the tires goin to be the key factor.

corvette, ferrari, and porsche run larger rims cuz they need the contact area of a wider tire. they also run twice the hp most of us run, plus there rwd.

RWD doesn't affect wheel diameter, neither does a wider contact patch. One would be able to have a wide tyre on a small wheel, as long as the small wheel is wide enough to support it. Most every engineer who I have spoken to recommends using the smallest wheel that fits over the brakes. That's why a lot of the top end cars, like Porsches, Corvettes, and 3000GT VR-4 (97+) use 18" wheels. It is strictly for caliper fitment. I would go with the smallest wheel that will fit whatever brakes you plan on running at any point in the future.
