#22058, "Does insurance cover your car for autocross/track events?"

Does anyone know for a fact whether your personal auto insurance covers your car at autocross/track events? I wish I could take my car, but am worried about the whole insurance issue. Thanks.

I do not believe car insurance covers autocrossing. At least from what I've seen at Solo2. Which autocrossing event are you planning to attend?

I wasn't sure and had to email my wife and ask. She said that they would not cover anything that occurs at any type of racing event. That was followed by a bunch of !!!!!

Regular insurance certainly does NOT cover ANY racing event like drag racing, circle track events, or autocross, and they might not even cover you if you get into an accident street racing (maybe, maybe not, I'm not sure on that one).

You can purchase racing insurance, but that is naturally above and beyond what you would normally pay, and it's probably expensive too.

VX, do you really think race insurance would be THAT much more? considering typical insurance is mostly there to replace 2 party's cars and pay for 2 party's medical bills. depending on the type of coverage on race ins im sure it would just cover your vehicle, maybe not health? and youd probably be the only one covered, not someone elses car or health??

edit: not trying to be argumenative, and i could be dead wrong...this is just something that i thought about reading your post emoji

Didn't take it as argumentative at all emoji

I was just speculating that insurance for racing events would be expensive, since it would probably be considered a "high risk" activity.

I tried doing a quick search of racing insurance, but came up empty handed emoji

I work for an insurance company. They will not cover any races at any "organized" events. Some insurance companies actually go to auto-x websites and official member lists, and if they see your name on the list, they could cancel your policy.

Woah ok. I was actually thinking of doing a track event, but I think it's way too risky to be driving with other cars very near you on a track (although passing was only allowed on the straights). Autocross you usually don't have any risk except cones right? (since you aren't passing each other). I searched and found that if the event is considered a driver's improvement school (where you have an instructor in your car), then it has been covered by insurance in the past. However, I wouldn't want to risk that...thanks for the input...

besides... don't they make you sign a waiver before you can even attend the event? Just a little piece of paper saying you remove them from any liability for any damages to you or your property during the event. emoji

Pretty sure that SCCA offers it's members discounted event coverage though. Check their site man! emoji

100% certain insurance does not cover you on any track, organized or not, nor at any unofficial "speed contest". Plus in Cali, if you get a ticket for street racing, it's legal for your insurance to completely drop you. Good luck explaining that to the next company you try to get coverage with.

Not only do insurance agents go to the track- Mitsubishi service centers do too. It will void your warranty.

This is why I bought a 1G to go to road racing ... can't afford the 2G getting bumped by some hotshit Honda.

One tip from an SCCA rallycross track owner- if you wreck, have someone tow you to a ditch as far from the track as possible and then call the CHP.

Yeah, I about to say. Blame it on a hit and run (I hate insurance companies, at least the ones I've dealt with from people crashing into me).

From what I understand, "Driving school" events are generally covered by insurance. However, if the event has any sort of competition angle to it, then no dice. In fact, that was the main reason Open Track (I think it was) stopped using transponders for lap timers, as if times were recorded it would be considered a competition. In the end, it probably depends on your insurance company. Some are likely to be more accomodating then others.

As for AutoX, you have to try pretty hard or be very unlucky to damage your car. Most you'll do is scuff a bumper on a cone. AutoX gives you a miniscule fraction of the seat time as hot lapping does, but it is still a fun sport.

I have honestly been more worried about having a wreck on the drive to and from the track then at it. That said, having a car spin out right in front of you just after Magic Mountain at Buttonwillow definitely gets your attention!

Its too bad that the money-grubbing insurance companies are prone to act this way. I believe that the experience and car-control skills gained at hot lapping events make you a MUCH safer driver in the real world.

My ins company actually asked me when i was signing up...they do not cover any kind of racing at all..that means if i were street racing, wrecked and it was determined that i was racing they wouldn't cover me then either...best bet if you race at the track and wreck...as long as it's somewhat drivable leave and go run into a guard rail or something...LOL
