I have a 99rs and Im going to do a rear disc conversion on the rear and convert to gsx rotors all around.The thing is my car didnt come with abs and was wondering what I needed to get so I can have abs.Also how much better is abs at stopping than not having it.

I perfer no ABS. I trust my stopping abilities over the computer's "just mash and pray" method.

yeah, i thought the same thing. but when shit happens really fast you can't think or control your foot, it just mashes to the floor! so yeah, get abs. i had to slamm on them for a deer and swerve to the left. then i was gonna slide off the road so i swerved right and let off the brake and my car SURGED to the right when i caught traction again and i almost ran off the road the other way after hitting the deer. but it only left two minor dents that i can hardly notice get abs. but i know i left my mark in that town. they arel ike 25 ft long and slant into both lanes. u can see them better one direction tho.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.

Adding ABS to a car that didn't come with it stock is certainly a non-trivial mod. I've never heard of anyone doing it before. For system components you'd need at least wheel speed sensors, an ABS computer, and a hydraulic modulator system with hi pressure steel piping.

The true advantage with ABS is not only that it it stops your car quicker in a straight line and on most low traction surfaces, but that it gives you steering control. If you lock the wheels in a panic stop with a regular car, inertia dictates the vehicle will maintain its trajectory regardless of steering input. With ABS, since your wheels are still (mostly) rotating, the car will respond to your control allowing you to swerve around the obstacle. Unfortunately, this is almost never explained to people when they buy a new car so they rarely use the capability.

I don't think there is a human alive that can out-brake a modern ABS system. If Formula 1 drivers lock up their brakes in panic stops, so will you. Certainly some of the early passenger car systems weren't that good, but anything from the last say 4-5 years will certainly be uncomparable.

I personally think ABS is the single biggest safety innovation since seat belts. It was the only option I wish was available on my car when I got it.


ABS saved my own self in a panic situation. I was doing 85 on the freeway in a rental car when car in front of me suddenly swerved out of the lane. By the time I saw the reason why, there was nowhere else to go, and all I could do was jump on the brakes and hope I stopped before I hit the object sitting in the middle of my lane. It was a refrigerator. I had maybe 6 feet to spare when the car came to a rest. I won't buy a car without ABS ever again.
