TireRack reccomends 225/50-16. i'm sure you could fit a larger tire on 8" wide rims without much of a hit in the speed rating.

225/50 is the typical size you would use. I don't see why you couldn't put a 205/55 on it if you wanted to. Anything bigger than a 225 tire, and you will defenitely need some spacers, as 225 barely fits as it is and the rx-7 rims have the offset 4 mm in the wrong direction in the first place.

If you do the math, 8 inches is approximately 203 mm. This means that a 205 tire is only 2 mm wider than the wheel. I would not use a 205.

And why not? What's wrong with having your rim as wide as your tire?

As far as I know, as long as it fits, you should have no problem. A wider rim will support the tire better.

What I'm saying is that the tire will have a domed look to it because the air inside will stretch the sidewall past the tread. Just get 215s or 225s. You'll appreciate the extra traction anyway.
