I think I wanna run my next autoX with slick tires. I have stock 14 inchers on there right now. What would my best option be? Here's what I'm thinking:
1)Low profile slick tires on the 14's and aftermarket 17's with street tires for street use.
or
2)Keep the 14's for street use and buy some 16 inch cheap wheels with slicks for racing. Are steel wheels ok? Or are they too heavy? Is 16 a good size for autoX?
or
3)Ditch the 14's and get 17's with street tires and use them on the street and in races.
Of course I'll also be doing springs and shocks. I'm thinking Pro-kits with adj. struts. Thanks for any advice.

otherwise, get some rx7 rims. they are 16x8, nice and wide to put some fat sticky tires on them, and they only weigh like 13.5 lbs. you can usually get them pretty cheap too, from rx7 owners who have gotten new rims
go to Scca.org, check the rules for each class. stock, STS, STR and street prepared. Decide which class you want to compete in and then build your car around those rules. Putting RX7 16x8 wheels will put you in street prepared and that is a hard class to compete in. STS is a good class for our cars. If you want to run race tires, then STR. My point is to be well informed before you start buying stuff and then find out that you will never place in your class, because you lack the other $3000 to make your car competitive. Another good idea is to buy a 2001 rule book and read it from cover to cover before you buy anything.

Thanks for the advice. I just did my first autoX last weekend, and was unsure about the classes. They tech guy suggested street modified. That was a bad idea. I should have run in STS. Well I am definitly gonna order the rule book. What kind of tires are you using in STS? And wheels? That might be a better idea than running race tires in STR. Thanks again.

STS class limits your rim width to 7.5 inches and tire width to 225. I am running 16x7.5 wheels with 225/50ZR16 Dunlop SP8000 tires. I run approx 48psi in front and 42psi in rear with my current suspension setup.
If your car is nonturbo, you fit into this class with a few exceptions. By the sound of your first post, you do not have any mods that will throw you our of this class. The allowed mods allow us to build a kick butt autoX car and remain in a low class. Our competition is mostly the neon and civic SI.
STR class is the same as STS only with Race tires instead of Street tires. Certain tires are illegal to run in STS, so be informed before you buy. STR is usually only at local events and may not run at regional or national events. If nobody shows up in STR then you will be bumped into Street Prepared(with race tires and some show up on their own trailers) for the event. This is stiff competition!!!! STS will allow you to have more competition(more people run in this class)and if you get bumped a class for an event, it will be Street Prepared(with street tires) allowing you to have a better chance at placing.
BTW: Whatever you decide, buy light weight wheels. Heavy wheels make you very slow. Konig makes some good wheels that are light and will not break your pocket book.

lol, they may not break your pocketbook but they may break themselves from what i've heard. namely toxxins. i'd say get enkei's, they're racing rims ain't too much and were talking a quality name
