#19182, "WTF!! 205/40/17"

I tried to purchase a set of 205/40/17 tires from tirerack and they canceled my order because they said the tire size was unsafe for our cars. They said the 40 series only supports 900 lbs and I needed a 50 series (which supports 1200). I currently have nitto 555 235/45/17 and they are fine. I know other dsm'rs out there have 205/40/17, so what do you guys think?

I just checked on a 95 GS and the curb weight is 2,822 and the gross weight is 3,858. So its only short a couple hundred pounds. How unsafe is that?

maybe its unsafe because of the width ? the only 40 profiles i know come in 215 or 225

its unsafe because its only 40% of the width..which is 205

on your current tires, its 45% of 235...which is a lot more sidewall

i hate ruberband tires. i think 9d9 had 205/40/17 and they looked like ass

I tried two weeks ago to buy the 205/40/17 drag radials just b/c they didn't have 225/50/17 in stock due to back order and they canceled mine to for the same reason. They wanted me to go a bigger size, but a fried of mine with a gs had 205/40/17 drag radials just a few months ago on them and he drove fine with no problems. I guess i have to wait for the 225 ro come out of back order or just order the tire for a different car like i did with my other car when they did the same thing.

Check this story...

I've had 205/40/17s on for over 4 years & the only problem I had was that one went flat & I was still riding around on it un-noticed for about 10 miles. I got 4 nials in it and pretty much lost all tire pressure but did not notice until trying to bang a corner @ about 40mph. The turn was made but with some tire squeel and squish feeling. So I pull over & say SHIT I got a flat. I goto Discount, its just an easy place to go and do buisness with, & the guy there tells me that those tires are so stiff side-walled & our cars are light enough that they'd work almost like "run-flats" for a while after loosing all air pressure. So since I rambled on... I say they work better than planned on and make a good 50mile spare withought even changing to the real spare!

those tires will work fine in my younger years i worked ata tire shop...

trerack is jsut taking the legal and safer side to things some honda boyz probably sued them...

the 205/40/17 will be fine and yes low pros act as run flats for a while i have 224/45/17's and ran it about 75miles before i nocitce it looked like it was down like 5psi ina rear tire and it didn't have any presure...

it didn't have much ofa side wall left inside the tire though...

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.
