I don't have too much experience with this, so I thought I'd ask you guys.

I'm almost positive that the clunking noise in my suspension is caused by a bad cv joint on the passenger side. I've checked everything else and I've had the ball joint recall done already. So I'm gonna check the cv joint this weekend to be sure.

But assuming that IS the problem. Can you just replace the joint itself, or will I need a new half shaft?

Even if you can just replace the joint(which I don't think is possible), I recommend getting a new shaft. I've recently did the work on my Audi and it's hard enough replacing the shaft. Messing with all of that grease and pulling out the CV joint would be a VERY troublesome job. Besides that, for the price of a new joint, when compared to a new axle (with two joints in it) and a warranty minus the core, I think you'll be way ahead.

Just go to Autozone and buy yourself a new axle. Lifetime warranties rock.

Well.. first let's make sure it's a CV..

Usually.. you know a CV is bad.. when you are making a turn, and you hear clicking noise.. and not when you go over a bump (someone confirm that.. but that is my experience).

If that is the case, i'ld deff say you have a bad CV, and you can buy reboot kits. The sound you hear is a lack of grease on the cv, and the kits work preasonably well, and are usually 60 bucks cheaper than an entire new axle. I had one on my car for 30k miles with no problems.

dude autozone sucks! no offense to you but when i told them what i needed they told me 1 week and like $139+core after i explained it for 30 minutes. I went through napa and it was alot cheaper like $99+core and they knew what i was talking about. Good quality too, i haven't had a problem at all since i switched mine out. But to your question, yea u hear a "click" sound and you can't just purchase a "c-v joint" or the boots, you have to buy the whole half shaft. Biggest pita when installing is that more than likely your wheel bearing is stuck/rusted to the half shaft. As for the time for install i would give it anywhere between 1-2 hours, becuase u have to remove the entire wheel, bearing, and get the halfshaft seperated from the wheel bearing. i couldn't give u an exact time cause i had alot of other work done at the same time. i will search and find u the website to buy the half axle from that has good prices and they don't rebuild so really good quality.

When my CV joint went i didnt have a clicking/popping. I had a odd clunk whenever i started to engage the clutch, and a noticeable vibration at higher speeds. Corbin has a nice write-up that makes swapping them out simple.

^^^ that's exactly what my car is doing. When I first put the car under load, and first take load off I hear a clunking noise. I still haven't had time to jack up the car and inspect the CV joint though, I had to fix my broken exhaust mani studs last weekend. Double check ALL of your motor mounts, esp the front and rear ones, as if those are bad/worn/cracked, that can cause clunking when taking off under power and letting off the gas..If those are ok, then its prob the CV's..

jesus christ i have a clunking noise when i take off and i jacked up the car and my cv boot is torn does this mean i have to get a new axle and how much do those cost
