#13482, "Help..changed out cv-boot, but something went wrong"
So I followed Corbin's write-up on chenging out the axle, but I was only changing the outer CV-boot. I took out the whole axle, tore off the old boot and tapped out the joint. (NOTE: the joint came out pretty easily considered some guys at the shop said I'd hafta pound it off). Then I put the joint back in, re-fill with grease and clamped it down. Then when re-installing the axle the joint came off inside the boot. So while the axle was still on I tore off the clamp and re-fitted joint back in and re-clamped. So I took it out for a slow test drive and all I hear is this horrible grinding and scraping-metal on metal. Sounded like real bad brakes but it wasn't my brakes. Then I go to make a turn and it sounded like the wheel I did the boot chamge on was stuttering and skipping. So I bust a U and "clug clug CLUNK!" I put the car in gear again and no movement, sitting dead. I had the car towed back to the Auto Hobby Shop and am gonna work on it on Wednesday. I'm thinking the joint popped off - but what was the scraping noise?!? I thought the axle wasn't fully seated but the axle is in with about 1/4" metal showing. Should I try get another clamp and redo the joint again? Get a new axle? (NOTE: I didn't use that O-ring/ washer they supplied in the kit) Please help me out guys - Just sure hope I didn't kill my tranny...thanks in advance.
