Hey all, I have powerslot rotors with metal master pads (only unless 6 months old), and I haven't driven my car in about a month. Recently I started driving it and when I come to a complete stop, the brakes make a weird grinding noise like it is sticking or something (it's not the usual brake squeal). Also, if I am stopped, and let go of the brake slightly and then brake, it makes the same noise. What could this be? I've driven probably about 100 miles after the month that my car was sitting there unmoved...any ideas?

Really? The pads AND rotors are both under 6 months old, with less than 2000 miles total on them. No rain or snow here in Los Angeles either...

Rain or no rain, if its humid and they are not being used then they get rusty. It's not bad or anything, not on my old beater truck anyway. I just rode them on a couple of trips and it stopped and they cleaned right up.

i have the same noise on my powerslot rotors/axxis pads, and i drive my car every day and had been since i installed them. It is annoying, but i live with it. I figure more performance = some hassle

It may be more than this. It may be a sticking piston in one of your calipers or most likely it could be that the outside slider on the caliper is not springing back after a brake application. You might try bleeding the brakes a bit and also removing the bolts(one at a time)that hold your caliper on(putting a small amount of grease)and then reinstalling them. This would allow the outer pad to spring back away from the rotor. I think this is your problem.

Be careful, because if the piston is stuck or the caliper is not releasing tension on the rotor(even a small amount) while driving, your rotor and caliper will heat to extreme temps and cause damage.

If it is still doing this after this process, then it may be necessary to collapse your caliper piston with a C-clamp to get it all the way retracted. This will overflow your fluid reservoir, so you should take some fluid out before you start this. Then you need to refill it when you are finished.

I am not going into the brake bleeding process, if you do not know how to do it, let us know.

Remember, fresh fluid in the brake system will do wonders. If it is more than 2 years old, swap it out. This might just fix your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually replaced the brake fluid when I changed the rotors/pads (icjeclipse helped me and we bled the brakes too), and it's been fine until this past month. This grinding noise just started...so if it is rust, is there any quick easy way to get it off, like brake hard? And if it is in fact the caliper, wouldn't it go to extreme temps since I've driven on the freeway at 80 mph for about 20 mins? My braking seems to be fine, and I'm too lazy to go experiment right now...so any more input would be greatly appreciated.

If its just rust is should go away rather quickly with some decent hard stops (dont warp the rotor though)

If its the caliper sticking, do exactly what Deano said and grease up the caliper pins

Could also be the heat shield right behind the caliper, it is easy to bend and could just be rubbing on stuff

Thanks guys, I drove my car again today, and have better info now. I noticed that the front brake pads are rested against the rotor when the car is sitting still. Is that normal?

Also, it's not a grinding noise, it's more of a squeak. It sounds exactly like when you wash your car, and your rotors are rusted, and then you brake. Usually that will go away after 2-3 harder stops. However, the sound does not appear to be going away. It is only a squeak for less than half a second as my car is coming to a COMPLETE stop. If I do a rolling stop, where I almost stop, but then go, it makes no weird sounds. Could it also have anything to do with the new 17" rims I put on? I don't think it should. Any input would be great - I hope to get this taken care of this weekend because I hardly have any free time nowadays...

Put the car on the lift and spin the tire. You can always start the car on the lift and check it this way also. Remember to not brake hard when the tires are spinning. You might also try jacking both front sides of the car. This would get the wheels off the ground and allow you to freely turn the wheels.

You will know if it is dragging when you do this.

The pad will never move away from the rotor where you see a gap. It will not have any clamping force without brakes. Do not forget to take your car out of gear.

Use the parking brake/blocks to keep from rolling back if the front is lifted.

Thanks for all the input guys. Just wanted to let u know that the noise went away by itself after I did some more harder braking. Guess it probably was rust, but it sounded horrible...
