Okay, I need new tires for winter, so I wanted to go with the widest possible traction. The tires I'm looking at aren't anything fancy, or performance, but who needs to drive 100mph during the winter anyway. I can get a 225/50/16 that keeps the speedo calibrated correctly, but I can't get a 215/55/16, it's not made for this tire. If I get a 225, will it bulge out like crazy, or will it look stupid. Thanks for the advice guys

They will bulge but not to the point of looking stupid.

they will fit like 20's fit on our car. 225's are to wide you would need high inflation to keep the carcass flat on the road. otherwise it's gonna arch and the center of the tire won't sit on the ground. if your dying for wider tires go 205 50 16. they fit fine and are stiffer. there's really no need to change the size of the tire on the 16's unless the tire you want doens't come in 205 55 because it is somewhat a rare size.
i suggest just getting a good tire in the spec size. if your bent on 225 50's get wider rims
plus there's a chance of the 225 on the stock rim blowing off the wheel. just stay OE it's best and you can get good tires in that size.
look for yokahama V4's. great tire for the money andwon't wear out that fast compared to other v's or even Z's

not sure what you know about tires but lets do a little lesson.
in tire sizing the first number is height in millimeters the second is percent of the height in the sidewall and the third is rim diameter.
in this situation we're trying to put a wider tire on that will safely stay on this rim. therefore we want to make the tire wider but not so wide that the bead blows off the rim flange.
bead is the part of the tire that touches the rim.
rim flange is part of the rim made to accecpt the tire bead so it fits snugly.
so by changing from 205 55 16 to 205 50 16 we've decreased our sidewall height by 5%. the extra rubber becomes part of the tire that touches the ground. meaning about 5% more contact without a dangerously high plus size. plus a 50 series tire has less side all flex for tighter handling.
mathematically 205 50 gives 102mm of contact. 225 50 gives 112mm. if you get the tire completely flat on the ground which isn't possible. so even if you could get the tire to sit right it would mean overinflating your tires which puts you in the situation of possibly having them blow off the rim while driving.
