Just recently I have been getting this weird popping and kind of a metal on metal sound coming from my passenger side rear of my car. All of a sudden it just started to make this noise. It used to be mainly when I would hit a bump but now it does it when I turn and just drive. It's very annoying and I'm pretty worried about it. I've checked all the bolts on the rear suspension and they seem to all be very tight. Could this be a blown strut or bushing? I have TenzoR race springs and Tokico Illumina struts. If anyone can give me some ideas that would be great. Thanks.

check the condition of the rubber bushing at the top of the knuckle arm.. it has probably giving way and causing the metal on metal contact you hear. if it is gone you can get some replacement bushings made of urethane from energy suspension. you will have to get a kit for all the upper arm bushings, and probably have someone help you remove and install the replacements.

Not to sound extremely stupid but is this knuckle above the wheel under the wheel well? If so, that bushing doesn't look too great but it looks about as bad on the driver side too. Just the passenger side is making the noise though, maybe it's worse than it looks though. Please let me know if this is the knuckle you are talking about. I feel so lost because I know nothing about suspension besides lowering cars.

its cool, i didnt know much about cars/suspension/engine whats not till i started tinkering with this heap i drive it just takes time and willingness to learn.
as far as the part above the wheel at the top of the suspension, you are correct.
this was my pic i made last year when i became aware of the problem in my own car.
basically if the arm that comes down is not centered the bushing is probably gone and should be replaced. when it goes it can cause the noise of metal on metal contact and can make it seem as your tire is out of balance and cause weird wear on that tire.
at first when i saw the pic of your car i though it was a 99 which surprised me to think that your bushing had gone out already, but then later realized it was a 95 which is the same as mine. this bushing i think is prone to wear out after time as does it seem that most 95-96's are having this problem.
i think its technically safe for awhile, but got really annoying for me after awhile of it happening to me.
for replacement (its not fun) i replaced all my bushings at once, but i think you can get away with just getting a set of the "upper arm" bushings and just to the ones affected. you'll probably have to take it somewhere unless you have a friend that is willing to help and have access to a press and a good weekend to mess with it.

OK, I think that we are looking at the same thing now. On one side the bushing looks fine and on the other side of the arm the bushing has tons of cracks and things all over it. I'm pretty sure it's bad. I'm having it checked out on friday so I can be for sure. If that is what it is, I'm going to have them replace all the bushing with the energy suspension ones. Would this also make my car feel like it wants to slightly pull to the left? Also on the driver side I can only fit 2 fingers in between the tire and body of car and on the passenger side where I am having problems I can fit 3. Is this related to the bushing too? Thanks a lot for your help so far!

i dont think the bushing would cause this, but i suppose it could be partly to blame. our cars have a weird issue with the way one side of the car sits in relation to the other.. mine sorta did this too after i lowered it.. might just be a weight distrubution issue somewhere too.

iamnotwhoiam: OK, from what you have described to me and according to that picture, my bushing is bad. The knuckle has slid almost all the way over to the rear of the car on the arm. Thanks a lot for all of your help.

I've got kind of the same popping noise from the rear, but it only happens when I am on the brake pedal, and only when the brakes are warmed up. it seems like there's a stretching/creaking noise followed by a pop that speeds up/slows down depending on how fast I am going. Satan told me that the rear rotors need to be replaced, does this sound right? sorry for my lack of knowledge...any help/advice would be MUCHO appreciated
my car is a plain stock 96 talon ESI besides intake/plugs/wires/symborski - none of which would have anything to do with this noise of course

ok first off.. lets confirm that you have rotors in the back.. if they are they can provide some challenges when removing them. when i removed my rears they were a bit tough to remove compared to the fronts.. fist off you will have to get a bolt that will screw into the rotor and separate them from what they are on..this being after youve removed the calipers and other stuff. and then you have to be careful due to the emergency brake setup that sits on the insde of the rotor sorta like having a small drum brake on the insde of the rotor itself... i sorta let mine fall apart and had fun re-assembling it, but all in all it wasnt too terribly hard to do. if you dont want to mess with it i guess just take it somewhere.. might get lucky and get a flat rate for the replacement. i have no idea exactly how much it could run, but i would expect 100+ which may or may not include the rotors themselves. call around and start asking some shops in your area.

yes i do have rear rotors as Satan had previously turned them and now they are supposedly warped again so they need to be replaced...not enough metal on there to cut anymore off. I'm looking at some Brembo's CD'd and slotted for about $140 for the rear pair.
I don't know if I trust myself enough to do it myself, I'll look at them first before I give it a shot. I'd rather pay $100 just for the peace of mind of knowing that a pro did it and not a first timer as I would be. I am a DIY guy most of the time but if I screw this up it could be bad.
